3  States six goals  1-To form a more perfect Union  2-To establish Justice  3-To insure domestic Tranquility  4-To provide for the common defense  5-To promote the general Welfare  6-To secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity

4  Legislative Branch-2 Houses  House of Representatives & Senate  Law making branch  Describes how members of each House will be chosen  Lengths of service  Leaders of both Houses  Rules they will follow when making a law  Specific powers that each House has

5  Leaders:  Speaker of the House & Vice President  Lengths of Service:  2 & 6 Years  Official Removal:  Impeachment/House  Removal/Senate

6  Habeas Corpus cannot be taken away unless in times of war, rebellion, or public safety  All Bills for raising revenue ($) must start in the House  Enumerated Powers  Declare war  Coin money  Approve treaties  Amend the Constitution  Tax  Regulate commerce  Confirm presidential appointments  Necessary and Proper Clause

7  Executive Branch-Enforces laws  Headed by a President and Vice President  Describes how the President is elected (Electoral College)  Qualifications for offices  Term of Office (4 years)  Assumption of the Vice President if the President can no longer fulfill duties  Oath of office  Requirement to give a ‘State of the Union’ to the Congress

8  Powers:  Enforce laws  Make treaties  Command armed forces  Veto bills  Nominate officials and judges  Grant reprieves and pardons

9  Judicial Branch  Calls for one supreme court and lower courts that are set up by Congress  Describes cases of treason and penalties  Cases:  Constitutional cases  Federal laws and treaties  Disputes between states  Offenses that occur at sea

10  Relations between states  ‘Full Faith and Credit’ given to acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state  Extradition of criminals from one state to another  Process of admitting new states  Guaranteed Republican form of government in each state  Protection from invasion and also against domestic violence
