Animal and Plant Nutrient Transport

Remember how Animals Absorb in their Intestines?

Blood Vessels  Arteries- lots of Oxygen  Veins- lots of CO2  Capillaries –little vessels

Blood  Functions  Transports gases, waste, enzymes, hormones, nutrients, white blood cells, clotting proteins  Maintains Body temp  Removes toxins  Electrolytes and Water

Composition of Blood  Red blood cells  Hemoglobin for binding…  White blood cells  Immunity to do what?  Platelets  Clotting to stop blood loss  Plasma  Water! Proteins! Minerals! Hormones!

Who pumps it?  The heart  Four chambered  Double pump  To the lungs then to the body  Blood pressure is kept normal by the rhythmic beating of the heart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G nv54V8Jj1U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J A0Wb3gc4mE

What else?  Lymphatic vessels  Shown in green  They return excess water that leaked out of the vessels during transport

Animal Transport System  What are the functions of blood?  What do blood vessels carry?  What does the blood carry in it?  What’s the difference between veins and arteries?  What pumps the blood?  Where do the blood get oxygen from?  Where does the blood get water from?  Where does the blood get nutrients from?

What’s the big deal?  Why is it important for animals to have a circulatory system?  Discuss as a group

Here’s the question…  Do you think that plants have a system to circulate their materials?  Do you think it’s the same as in animals?

Plant Transport System  Dermal Tissue  Epidermis  Cuticle  Ground Tissue  Mesophyll for photosynthesis  Storage  Vascular Tissue  Transport of water, minerals and nutrients

Types of Vascular Tissue  Type #1  Xylem  Dead cells with only cell wall  Transports water and minerals from roots to leaves  Transpiration

Types of Vascular Tissue  Type #2  Phloem  Living cells that uses active transport  Transport sugars up and down (depending on need)

Vascular Tissue

Transport in Plants  Movement of Water  Water & mineral nutrients travel up through the ______  Water gets pulled up the stem from the roots as it evaporates out through the leaves via the stomata - this is known as ____________  Water is able to move up the stem by cohesion – tension theory  __________– water molecules stick together  __________– water molecules stick to the sides  Pressure from the roots forces the water up the stem

Water Movement

Your Assignment  Explain how the animal and plant systems transport their nutrients around by comparing the two organisms.  CER!  Work as a group to come up with an outline and write on your poster board!  Make it good, your fellow students will be critiquing it!
