1 DANCE from a mathematical point of view
Kelly Koning Math Project November 29th, 2010

2 Supporting Reasons Dancers need math to count the beats.
Dance takes an understanding of physics for jumps, leaps and raises. Rhythm in dancing is associated with pattern, pattern is mathematical. Dance movement is a combination of circles and lines - geometry. Creativity and thought are part of dance and math.

3 Two Dancers Dancers make endless patterns, there are endless patterns to solve mathematical equations. Two Dancers make lines and patterns through a room while they dance, creating different mathematical patterns. Two Dancers must count together to stay in rhythm with each other. Two Dancers follow a pattern insync much like a specific formula for solving a mathematical problem.

4 TIME DANCE & MATH Dancers physically experience time through dance. ex: Time is added, divided and multiplied using math. Dancers counting time with their movements is showing a pattern of dance, but expressing math with the numbers.

5 Visualizing problem solving of math, as a dance.
Like math, subtracting - adding - multiplying - dividing from side to side is like a dance, one step after the next forms a dance arrangement.

6 Do the Math Dance What is the Math Dance ? Mathematical problem-solving is usually involved in the creation of the dances, and sometimes leads to new mathematics as well. In many cases the choreographic ideas easily translate to classroom activities usable in college math classes. Mathematical areas involved include polyhedral geometry, symmetry, the mathematics of rhythm, and variations on dissection puzzles such as tangrams. Video, click on the link and watch

7 Take Away Math and Dance correlate on many levels.
In order to Dance you must use elements of mathematics. Dance can be a creative way to better understand math and equations.

8 Quiz Questions In what way does mathematics influence dance ? ANSWER: Through numbers, patterns, physics, and rhythm. Do math and dance correlate ? ANSWER: Yes ! Dancers use patterns to stay together and remain on beat, name two mathematical patterns/topics that we used in class to calculate the correct answer ANSWERS: - The Fibonacci Sequence Golden Ratio The Pythagorean Theorem Euhler Characteristic Theorem

9 THANK YOU Kelly Koning
