Why Conduct the Study? Feeding America 2011 – 19,980 food insecure people in Arlington County (approx 9% of total population) AFAC 2400 families referred=5200 individuals referred - 1500 families served=- 3000 individuals served 900 families not coming=1200 individuals not coming 19,980 food insecure individuals - 5,200 individual served = 14,780 individuals missing

Definitions Food Insecurity: – Limited or uncertain access to food, reduced food intake, and disrupted eating patterns. Hunger: – A condition that may result from food insecurity

Part I: Primary Survey Methods: – Fall 2012-Feb 2013 – Random-Digit Dialing – Sample: Targeted lower- income households (predicted households with incomes $60,000 or less) – Home and Cell #s – English and Spanish Initial Sample: 14,235 Final Sample: 828

Food Insecurity (p.18) Results: 345 of 828 = 42% or 4 in 10 Arlingtonians in the $60,000 and under income group 2010 US Census: 75,000 Arlingtonians fall in the income category of $60,000 or less. 42% of 75,000 = 31,500 31,500 individuals in Arlington County experience food insecurity

Children (p.22-23) 828 households responded 157 = at least one child in their home 46 of 157 (29%) = food insecurity experienced by at least one child Examples of questions answered that indicate child food insecurity: – In the last 12 months, did you ever cut the size of your meal or did your children skip meals because there wasn’t enough money for food? – In the last 12 months, did your children ever not eat for a whole day because there wasn’t enough money for food?
