4 Modelled Show Me At this stage the responsibility is solely with the teacher. The teacher would model the strategy to be learned. e.g. highlighting key words in information texts, or writing instructions for making biscuits. An essential stage in any learning process. It answers the question ‘What are we supposed to do?’ It makes explicit ‘how to’. The teacher as the model demonstrating ‘how to’. The teacher must have clear and very specific objectives for the session.

5 Shared Do it with me At this stage, the process is shared with the children. The children are a part of this process, unlike in the modelling stage. Shared work ought to be interactive: a shared learning experience. At this stage, the learning is a joint venture between the teacher and the children. The teacher will bear the greater responsibility, but will ask for responses from the children e.g. “How can we work out what this word is?” “Who can think of a really good sentence to start our recount?”

6 Guided Let me do it with others At this stage children are supported by either the teacher, or other children, and appropriate resources. The learning is largely child led, but the teacher is there to guide/scaffold the learning. The teacher will have organised the children into groups of like ability. The teacher will work with one group, and will guide the children through the learning process providing appropriate scaffolding - drawing on previously learned skills and teaching new ones.

7 Independent Let me do it on my own At this stage the children have been sufficiently supported and set up for success. Children work independently.
