3 History Officially, America was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. The US gained its independance from Britain on 4 July, 1776.

The highest mountain is Mount McKinley in Alaska On the border with Canada we can find The Great Lakes ( Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior)
