Presentation on theme: "One mistake and you have to start again!"— Presentation transcript:

1 One mistake and you have to start again!
Quiz on the reflex arc This quiz has 10 multiple choice questions Click on the answer box you think is correct BEWARE ! One mistake and you have to start again! This provides 10 pre-set questions with suitable links to act as a “sudden death” quiz.If you prefer to have this as a “Try Again” quiz, then you need to edit the final slide. You will also need to edit the text on this first slide to remove the Beware warning. Please use slide 35 and 36 if you wish to add your own questions Click here to start quiz

2 Click here to go straight
Using the quiz The next ten slides have the quiz questions After this, you can see the same questions with their answers and a brief explanation It is MUCH better revision to try the quiz first ! Click here to go straight to answer version Click here to start quiz

22 all the questions correct.
Well done ! You have got all the questions correct. Click here to see answer section Click here to end quiz

23 Answer section This will take you through the same questions again, showing you the answers with some explanation. Click here to start answer section

24 Typically a muscle effector
The effector has to produce the required response – eg your arm muscle must lift your hand away from a hot surface. (The effector can also be a gland which releases a hormone) 24

25 Carries the impulse away from the receptor
sensory neurone This is linked to the receptor and carries an electrical signal ( the message) away from the receptor towards the spinal cord. 25

26 Releases a chemical synapse
A synapse is the gap between the end of one neurone and the beginning of the next one. The signal is passed across this gap as a chemical. 26

27 The neurone in the spinal cord
relay neurone The relay neurone hands on the message from the sensory neurone to the motor neurone, just like a baton is passed on in a relay race. 27

28 Produces the response effector
This is a definition of effector – it can be a muscle or a gland which releases a hormone 28

29 Responds to the stimulus
receptor This is a definition of receptor. It is often a sense cell 29

30 Eg a cell in the retina of the eye
receptor This is an example of a receptor. Others might be the pain- and temperature-sensitive cells in your skin 30

31 Carries impulse away from the spinal cord
motor neurone If the impulse if going away from the spinal cord, it must be going to an effector eg a muscle. The muscle will get a message to move – hence the term “motor neurone” 31

32 First neurone to carry an impulse in a reflex arc
sensory neurone There are three neurones in a reflex arc : sensory neurone, then relay neurone and finally motor neurone 32

33 Found at each end of a relay neurone
synapse Synapse is the name for the gap between neurones. The electrical signal triggers the release of a chemical which travels across the synapse 33
