2 Drugs and Consciousness Module 20

3 States of Consciousness Drugs and Consciousness  Dependence and Addiction  Psychoactive Drugs  Influences on Drug Use Near-Death Experiences

4 Drugs and Consciousness Psychoactive Drug: A chemical substance that alters perceptions and mood (effects consciousness).

5 Dependence & Addiction Continued use of psychoactive drug produces tolerance. With repeated exposure to a drug, the drug’s effect lessens. Thus it takes bigger doses to get the desired effect.

6 Withdrawal & Dependence 1.Withdrawal: Upon stop taking a drug (after addiction) users may experience undesirable effects of withdrawal. 2.Dependence: Absence of drug may lead to feelings of physical pain, intense cravings (physical dependence) and negative emotions (psychological dependence).

7 Misconceptions about Addiction 1.Addictive drugs quickly corrupt. 2.Addiction cannot be overcome voluntarily. 3.Addiction not different than repetitive pleasure-seeking behaviors. Addiction is a craving for a chemical substance despite its adverse consequences (physical & psychological).

8 Psychoactive Drugs Psychoactive drugs are divided into three groups. 1.Depressants 2.Stimulants 3.Hallucinogens

9 Depressants Depressants are drugs that reduce neural activity and slow body functions, they include: 1.Alcohol 2.Barbiturates 3.Opiates

10 Alcohol 1.Alcohol affects motor skills, judgment, and memory… increases aggressiveness reduces self awareness. Drinking and Driving Daniel Hommer, NIAAA, NIH, HHS Ray Ng/ Time & Life Pictures/ Getty Images

11 Barbiturates 2.Barbiturates: Drugs that depress the activity of the central nervous system, reducing anxiety but impairing memory and judgment. Nembutal, Seconal, and Amytal are some examples.

12 Depressants 3. Opiates: Opium and its derivatives (morphine and heroin) depress neural activity, temporarily lessening pain and anxiety. They are highly addictive. http://opioids.com/timeline

13 Stimulants Stimulants are drugs that excite neural activity and speed-up body functions. 1.Caffeine 2.Nicotine 3.Cocaine 4.Ecstasy 5.Amphetamines 6.Methamphetamines

14 Caffeine & Nicotine Caffeine and nicotine increase heart and breathing rates, and other autonomic functions to provide energy. http://www.tech-res-intl.com http://office.microsoft.com/clipart

15 Amphetamines Amphetamines stimulate neural activity, causing speeded-up body functions and associated energy and mood changes, with devastating effects. National Pictures/ Topham/ The Image Works

16 Ecstasy Ecstasy or Methylenedioxymethamphet amine (MDMA) is a stimulant and mild hallucinogen. It produces euphoric high and can damage serotonin-producing neurons resulting in permanent deflation of mood and impairment of memory. Greg Smith/ AP Photos

17 Cocaine Cocaine induces immediate euphoria followed by a crash. Crack, a form of cocaine, can be smoked. Other forms of cocaine can be sniffed or injected. http://www.ohsinc.com

18 Hallucinogens Hallucinogens are psychedelic (mind- manifesting) drugs that distort perceptions and evoke sensory images in the absence of sensory input. Ronald K. Siegel

19 Hallucinogens 1.LSD: (lysergic acid diethylamide) powerful hallucinogenic drug (ergot fungus) also known as acid. 2.THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol): is the major active ingredient in marijuana (hemp plant) triggers a variety of effects, including mild hallucinations. http://static.howstuffworks.com Hemp Plant

20 Drugs Summary

21 Influences on Drug Use The percentage of US high school seniors reporting use of alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine from 70s to late 90s.

22 Influences on Drug Use Use of drugs is based on biological, psychological and social-cultural influences.

23 Marijuana Use Use of marijuana in teenagers is directly related to “perceived risk” involved with the drug.

24 After a close brush with death many people report experiencing moving through a dark tunnel with light at the end. Under the influence of hallucinogens others report bright light at the center of their field of vision. Near-Death Experiences (From “Hallucinations” by R.K. Siegel. 25 25 Mind-Body Problem 1.Dualism: Dualists believe that mind (non- physical) and body (physical) are two distinct entities that interact. 2.Monism: Monists believe mind and body are different aspects of the same thing. Near-death experiences raise the mind-body issue. Can the mind survive the dying body?
