2  Vertebrates: feature a well developed brain enclosed in a cranium. They are large and very active  Tunicates: invertebrates that are free swimming or sessile  Lancelets: Mostly small eel-like animals that can swim, but are mostly in the sand

3  Jawless Fish  Oldest class of vertebrates  Examples: Hagfish and Lampreys  Type of fish that cannot regulate body temperature

4  Jawed fish  Paired fins and nares  Two-chambered hearts  Scales  Cartilaginous skeletons  Include Sharks, rays, and chimeras

5  Bony fish  Oldest fossils about 420 million years old  Have swim bladders  body coated with mucus glands  Have an almost completely calcified skeleton  Include Marlins, Groupers, and Gobies

6  Skin is permeable to water  All have poison glands as a defense mechanism  Live in water and on land  Can change color, bright colors = highly toxic  Four limbs  Have a cranium, spine, and rib cage  Include Salamanders, frogs, and caecilians
