What Are Hurricanes? Tropical cyclones (lows) with sustained winds of more than 74 mi/h. Normal sea level air pressure is 1010 mb In hurricanes air pressure can reach 900mb 882 mb Hurricane Wilma 2005
5
Where do they form? Hurricanes form over oceans when water temperatures reach above 80 degrees.
6
Where do they form? Hurricanes form over the Atlantic Ocean Indian Ocean: Tropical Cyclones Western Pacific Ocean: Typhoons
8
When do they form? Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June through November. Needs water temperature above 80 degrees Needs water temperature above 80 degrees 2005 had storms into December 2005 had storms into December

How Do Hurricanes Form
10
Hurricanes get their energy from warm, humid air from the oceans surface. Winds spiral counter- clockwise same as all low pressure in northern hemisphere.
12
How Do Hurricanes Form Lowest air pressure is found in the eye of the hurricane Low pressure forms due to the warm moist air rising
