Nitinol is an acronym for Nickel Titanium Naval Ordnance Laboratories
It was developed by William Buehler and Frederick Wang
A shape memory alloy is an alloy that “remembers” its shape.
Nickel-Titanium alloys were first developed in 1962 and 1963.

When cold, the material will deform and stay in the deformed shape
Upon heating, it will return to its original shape
Two-Way
Material remembers two shapes, one for low temperature and one for high
