2.  What is value?  Read pg. 126-127 of the text  If your house was on fire and you could rescue only one possession, what would that be and why? Does is have monetary or sentimental value? Would it have value for other family members? How does your choice compare with other student’s?

3.  Read “Redefining Happiness” on page 129.  Can happiness and value be equated with each other? Why or why not?  Money does not buy happiness.  We may not attain the things we value.  Happiness is hard to define and measure by anything we own-it is intangible. How is value measured in society?

4.  Pre-reading: Complete the following statements then share with the class. Happiness is... To be happy, I... I am happy when... This is what it takes to make me happy... Do you think these answers will change as you get older or stay the same? What did happiness mean to you when you were five years old?

5.  Read pg.128-129  Does the fisherman seem happy?  Does the financier seem happy?  Will the fisherman follow the advice of the financier?  Will the financier follow the message of the fisherman?

6. 1)How important is money and commercial success to the happiness of the financier? To the fisherman? 2)How do you think each of them defines happiness? 3)How do you define work? Is all work equally valuable? 4)You are the fisherman. Write a letter to your brother, daughter or other adult in which you explain your impressions of the financier’s advice, whether you intend to follow the advice and why. Create and include details of your life to make it realistic and believable.
