How is Science Done? Pages 24 & 25: Scientists make quantitative and qualitative observations. They then make inferences based on those observations. They use the observations as empirical evidence.

5 Vocabulary … 1)Number pages 26 through 50 in your ISN. 2)Vocabulary for this unit will go on pages 32 and 33. 3)Add “vocabulary” to the table of contents. 4)Label the tops of pages 32 and 33 “Unit 1 Vocabulary.”

6 Vocabulary … Observation : any information collected with the senses. When we observe, we record what is seen, smelled, tasted, heard and touched. Qualitative : is a description of something's properties. It can't be measured. "The apple is red." Quantitative : is a measureable description using quantity or amount. “The apple weighs 125 grams.” “There are three apples.” Inference : a conclusion based on observations. Inferences go beyond what we can directly sense. You use experience, reasoning and logic to make an inference. Empirical evidence : information acquired by observation or experimentation.
