Converting Units of Measure

M. 4b Convert units within a given measurement system to include length, weight/mass, and volume. You have worked on converting volume in the metric and English systems. Today, we will work on mass/weight. Is it important that we know how much we weigh? Of course it does, because it determines how healthy we are.

Mass/Weight Name some units that are used to measure mass/weight. Now let’s classify them as English (Standard or Customary) or as Metric. Just as you converted units for volume in both systems, you will convert units for mass/weight in both systems. The metric should be especially simple, because you will use the same memory aid and procedures for mass/weight units as you did for volume. So you really just have to learn the conversion rates for the English system.

Common English Conversions for Mass/Weight 1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz) 1 ton (T) = 2,000 pounds (lb)

The difference in Oz’s When measuring volume, you use fluid ounces (fl. Oz) When measuring weight, you use ounces (oz)

Remember the memory aids you learned when working with the English system in volume. You will be using these again. “Sally Likes to Dally” Small to Large Divide “Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply

Work the following examples with me. Convert 3 pounds to ounces Conversion Rate: 1 lb = 16 oz Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply So, 3 x 16 = 48 3 lbs = 48 oz

Example #2 80,000 lbs = ____ tons Conversion Rate: 1 t = 2,000 lbs “Sally Likes to Dally” Small to Large Divide So, 80,000 ÷ 2,000 = 40 80,000 lbs = 40 t

Example #3 144 oz = ____ lbs Conversion Rate: 1 lb = 16 oz Sally Likes to Dally” Small to Large Divide So, 144 ÷ 16 = 9 144 oz = 9 lbs

Example #4 Convert 9.5 tons to pounds Conversion Rate: 1 t = 2,000 lbs Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply So, 9.5 x 2,000 = 19,000 9.5 t = 19,000 lbs

Example #5 140 lbs = ___ oz Conversion Rate: 1 lb = 16 oz Lilly Sings with Milly” Large to Small Multiply So, 140 x 16 = 2,240 140 lbs = 2,240 oz

Independent Practice: (DOK 1) 1.64 oz = ____ lb 2.10,000 lb = ____ t 3.89 t = ____ lb 4.2 t = ____ oz 5.420 oz = ____ lb 4 5 178,00064,00026.4

Closure: M. 4b Convert units within a given measurement system to include length, weight/mass, and volume. You need to memorize the conversions we have learned today. How many ounces are in a pound? How many pounds are in a ton? What would weigh a ton?

Homework: 1 st 2 nd 7 th Period Solve the following: At a day care center a quart of milk can serve 6 children. 1. How many children can be served from 8 gallons of milk? 2. If the day care center decides to increase the amount of milk to 1.5 quarts to serve 6 children, how many more gallons of milk should the day center buy? Show all work or explain your answers.

Homework: 3 rd 4 th 6 th Write the memory aids used for both English conversions and metric and explain the meaning and how to use each.
