11 History A Brief History of the Naval Air Depot, Jacksonville http://www.nadjx.navy.mil/History%20Page.htm In 1939, the citizens of Jacksonville voted a $1 million bond issue to purchase the site for the Naval Air Station. NAS Jacksonville is the only military installation in the nation established by a direct gift of the people.

12 http://www.nadjx.navy.mil/History%20Page.htm NAS Jacksonville was commissioned on October 15, 1940, but construction of the first runway and fuel piers actually began in late 1939. On September 7, 1940, the first pilot landed on the still- unfinished runway.
