3 WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT? How to create personal goals for future learning, work, and community involvement. Allowing you to understand your interests, skills, and characteristics. Allowing you to get a look into the future by looking at today’s economic and workplace trends, work opportunities, and ways to search for work. Allowing you to START thinking about life after high school.

5 And then… for homework You will write me an introduction letter about your expectations for this course. Be sure to discuss expectations for yourself and me. It should be one page, single-spaced, typed and professionally/formally written. It must also be e-mailed to me: james.hunter@ucdsb.on.ca

7 Past comments: I would like you to guide me through my next few years of high school and help me plan my future career after school life I think that you will help me to choose my right job and will be able to have more community service hours. I will need you to help me set goals in order to help me through my high school life and university too. I know that I will have assignment that may be hard but I want you also through the term to give my confidence and the faith that I will be able to pass. To learn some fun facts and games.

8 OBJECTIVES OF TODAY’S CLASS 1. To explain the difference a between and give examples of a “job”, “career” and “occupation” 2. To explain the difference between and give examples of “dreams”, “goals” and “aspirations” 3. To show an understanding of factors that can promote or stop you from achieving your goals.

12 CAREER vs. JOB Job: Position that has specific tasks and duties at a specific location For example, coach of the Indiana Pacers. Career: a summary of all your education, paid work, volunteer experiences, and activities of interest to you. ◦ The story of a whole life; A journey that includes all the events in your life. ◦ Interests, skills, and talents make up your life story

13 GOALS vs. DREAMS Dreams: clues about your interests and passions. Goals: What you want to achieve for yourself. They are SMART. Aspirations: goals and dreams mixed into one!

14 The World beyond High School … What does it mean to you?  “I will earn my own money”  “It is a huge responsibility”  “I am looking forward to the change from school to work”  “I will get to do something I like everyday”  “A full time job sounds scary”  “Will I get into college/university?”  “I can go where I want, when I want”  “No one can tell me what to do”  “I can be my own boss”

15 How Can YOU Lead a Balanced and Productive Life? 1– Expect the unexpected. 2 – Learn to say no. 3 – Use your time for what really matters to you. 4 – Plan for free time. 5 – Keep a healthy perspective. 6 – Establish goals. 7 – Set priorities. 8 – Establish boundaries and life within them. 9 – Tap into your internal resources. 10 – Get help from external resources and services.

16 The Road to Independence Independence: freedom from the control, influence, support or help of others. Interdependence, a feeling of mutual reliance. You rely on others and they reply on you. Support system. Adults, parents and friends may also be part of your support structure. Knowing yourself is a life long process.

18 Self-Assessment Self-Assessment is a process of determining who you are.

19 Why care about myself? What am I good at? Where will I be happiest? What am I capable of? What, deep inside, is the strongest thing about me? These questions are important because, 1. You can see your strengths + how to build them 2. Know what your weaknesses are + work on them =Focus on the person you want to become This process is called self-assessment

Interests – still playing ball every week Professional Status: still teaching (here or overseas) Yearly Income: not important, as long as mortgage paid, savings ok, and kids have money for post- secondary studies I hope to retire by the age of… : I have given up thinking about it. Hopefully before I’m 70

I have completed Reflection #2 by typing it and made sure it’s in a safe so I have it for my evaluation. 8. I have completed Reflection #3 and made sure it’s in a safe so I have it for my evaluation.
