doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 1 IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks Coexistence Task Group Report #1 Tel Aviv Israel

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 2 Our plan for the week Report on ExCom vote in Kauai Start development of Coexistence Model Call for Submissions on Coexistence Mechanisms Discuss with Jim Lansford on how 802.15 TG2 and Bluetooth SIG can work together Presentations on Coexistence Model and Coexistence Mechanisms

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 3 Develop a Coexistence Model for the 2.4 GHz ISM band, that we can all agree to, which will help us assess the issues of Coexistence in a more quantitative way Deliver a Recommended Practice for WPAN devices intended to operate in a WLAN environment. Coexistence Task Group Charter

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 4 Agreement between 802.11 & 802.15 The Coexistence Study Group would become a Task Group in 802.15 The Liaisons from 802.11 would be able to vote in the Task Group since they have voting rights in 802.15 Progress of the group would be reported at the regularly scheduled 802.11/802.15 joint sessions

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 5 Once a draft Recommended Practice is ready for letter ballot it would be submitted to both the 802.15 and the 802.11 Working Groups for separate letter ballots. In order for the Recommended Practice to be forwarded to the Executive Committee for Sponsor ballot, the letter ballot must pass in both Working Groups. Agreement between 802.11 & 802.15

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 6 Anyone attending a Coexistence Task group session would be given attendance credit, for that time, in either 802.11 or 802.15. Agreement between 802.11 & 802.15

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 7 ExCom Vote in Kauai Bob Heile moved to approve the PAR Vic Hayes seconded the motion Motion passed unanimously in ExCom

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 8 Coexistence Model The purpose of this model is: –To understand under what circumstance there is a coexistence problem and under what circumstances there is not a problem. –To develop supporting evidence to justify the recommended suggested practices

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 10 Call for submission on Coexistence Mechanisms As members of the Task Group are developing the Coexistence Model they may think of ideas on how to facilitate coexistence of WPAN and WLAN devices. The purpose of this Call for Submissions is to solicit submissions on these Coexistence Mechanisms to IEEE 802.15 Coexistence Task Group, IEEE 802.15- 00/009r0

doc.: IEEE 802.15-00/010r0 Submission January 2000 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 11 Discussion on 802.15 TG2 and Bluetooth Collaboration Met with Jim Lasford and Evan Green from Intel, representing the Bluetooth SIG Bluetooth recently established a Task Group on WLAN interference. The goals of that task group are consistent with the goals of TG2. Going forward we will look for ways to work together.
