Think about homelessness at Christmastime. What help is available locally for people in this situation? How could you help? Create a recount to document the Smarden Spectacular for future children – you may use any medium you wish, but remember to use PAST TENSE. Research the work of Barnados (which was founded in Victorian times) or Children In Need. Find out if they still help local people. You may decide how you present your information. Design and make a gorgeous Christmas Card for one of our local elderly residents. (Ask for some card if you need it.) Choose your favourite Christmas Carol. What is the history behind it? What meaning does it have for you? 2. Find out what each of the five candles of the Advent ring represent. Golliwogs were a popular Victorian toy, research why and then tell me why they have been subsequently removed from the shops. Please also tell me your thoughts about golliwogs. The train network was introduced in Victorian times, create a timeline to document important events. In 1870, the Education Act was passed to ensure that every child was sent to school and not the workhouse. Analyse why this was important & how childhoods changed to what they are today. Write a verse for a song for “Children In Need”. The Victorians had a very different dress code to ours today – compare clothing for the rich and poor both today and in Victorian times. Which do you think were more practical, which would you rather wear? 3. Come up with an idea to remember all the characters from the “Twelve Days of Christmas” song. Why do Christians celebrate Christmas? Explain. Imagine you have a budget of £50. What 5 presents would you buy for a child in need? Explain your choices, working out the total cost. Investigate where the money from last year’s “Children In Need” went. Draw a bar chart or pie chart to show the different percentages. Design and make a gingerbread person that looks like yourself. Bring it in to show us or take a photograph of it! Watch a Christmas film and write a review. Remember to tell us what you liked and why, maybe what you didn’t like and why. 4. Find a Christmas poem that you like. Learn it off by heart and recite it to the class. Christmas has become too commercialised! What do you think? Justify your opinions – give reasons for and against. Imagine you are homeless. Write a diary entry about how you feel, especially at this time of year. Look at the ingredients list on a Christmas pudding or Christmas cake. Where do each of the ingredients originate from? How many miles do you think the whole item travelled? Design and make a Christmas decoration for our class tree. Name it & you can have it back when we break up in December. Find out how another country celebrates Christmas and create a short report. For some of the activities you might need to ask for some information to help you complete the task.
