Mood and Visualization Examples Why and How?

Mood and Visualization What is mood and visualization? Mood - The climate of feeling in a literary work. The choice of setting, objects, details, images, and words all contribute towards creating a specific mood. For example, an author may create a mood of mystery around a character or setting but may treat that character or setting in an ironic, serious, or humorous tone

More on Mood and Visualization Visualization – creating pictures in your mind as you read OR creating actual pictures from hearing or reading text.

Why Start with Mood and Visualization? Mood and visualization are two of the easiest comprehension strategies. Most students are able to feel the mood of a story, once you have helped them to see how. Most students are also able to see a picture in their mind if you help them learn how.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Listen to a story – The Walk How does this story make you feel? What words or phrases make you fee this way?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Page 8 – “Nothing like this man had ever been on Privet Drive. He was tall, thin, and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak that swept the ground, and high-heeled, buckled boots. His blue eyes were light, bright, and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man’s name was Albus Dumbledore.” Visualization

The Not-So-Jolly Roger Page 4 - “We clutched our trees and watched the front of the ship turn into what looked like a huge wooden ocean liner. Except this ocean liner had cannons. And it was flying a flag from its mast- a black flag with a white skull. “Oh, no,” said Fred. He went back up the tree. Fast.” Mood and Visualization
