Vocabulary Coordinate Plane: a plane formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line with a vertical number line. Ratio : The comparison of one quantity to another. 3 lemons:4 apples Whole number: are the numbers beginning with zero and moving to the right. They do not include negative numbers. They are not fractions.

Vocabulary Continued Horizontal axis: referred to as the X axis. Vertical axis: referred to as the Y axis. A point is always given with the X followed by the Y coordinate. Please find point (5,4) and place a dot at that spot.

Pizza Party You decide to have a Pizza Party to celebrate the end of the trimester. You invite all of your friends and receive conformation that 35 of them will be attending your party. When you call the pizza joint they tell you that one large pizza with two toppings of your choice will cost $9.95 including tax. There are 12 pieces of pizza in each pizza. Each person eats an average of two pieces of pizza.

Directions What is the ratio of people to pieces of pizza? How many total pieces of pizza will you need to buy? How many total pizzas will you need to buy? How much is the total bill going to be? Challenge: What is the cost per person?

Build a ratio table that shows pizza, person/people and, cost all the way from one person to 35 people. People 6 Cost $9.95 Pizza 2/12 10/12 1 2 3

Build a Graph Using pizza has your x coordinate and people as your y coordinate construct a graph representing the line graph moving in only whole pizzas. Hint: Use your ratio table to find the information. Pizzas People

Graphing Unit Rates Dave can drive 400 miles in 8 hours. Jane can drive 400 miles in 6 hours. Using R X T = D calculate the rate for both Dave and Jane. Express your answer in terms of mph. Who traveled faster Dave or Jane?

MILES HOURS Looking at the two lines which one represents Dave and which one represents Jane? Defend your answer mathematically and in complete sentences.

0 100 200 300 400 What is the (X,Y) coordinate for the purple line and for the blue line? What is represented at coordinate (0,0)? What is represented at coordinate (1, Y)? 10 8 6 4 2 0

Using the numbers from the Dave and Jane problem Construct a ratio table showing when Dave would reach 400 miles compared to Jane. Construct a number line showing Dave and Jane and there differences in rate.

Pulling it together Compare the equation to the graph to determine which is moving at the greater speed. R X 12 hrs = 320 miles hours miles 0 100 200 300 400 16 12 8 4 0 Find the (X,Y) coordinate on the graph.
