Young people born from Slightly bigger than Baby Boomer Generation 78 million millennials born in the 20 years The Millennials

3 Millennial Traits: some Obvious, Some contradictory
Technologically savvy  highly influenced by media Politically engaged Short attention span but… good at multitasking Sheltered yet…America’s most educated generation Achievement-oriented: want to make $$$ but… are not driven by money Strive for recognition & fame but... value volunteering intrinsically (simply because it is the right thing to do) Less religious yet… great respect for older generations Marrying later, if at all; also higher divorce rate Higher expectations placed on their shoulders by themselves & people around them (peers, parents, friends, competition, older generations) Innovative, Polite, Entrepreneurial… aka Generation “Sell”

4 How millennials are seen
Despite stereotype of the youth as the generation that doesn’t value hard work and would rather have a good time… Millennials are the most powerful consumer group in the world Businesses cater to what Millennials want Millennials want to be entertained by today’s marketing and media Whether or not they like what they see, chances are they will share it Businesses want positive feedback from the largest consumer group “Entitlement Nation,” “Everybody gets a Trophy,” “Special People”

6 Versus: How millennials see themselves
New technology and hyper-connectivity (social media)=constant and instant communication. Millennials understand that... Social media is a tool to create a product: ourselves We package and promote ourselves as a brand to be managed and (metaphorically) sold for different purposes. For example, we design our pages and profiles to market ourselves depending on the social media site… On LinkedIn: stellar, exceptional, unique candidate for immediate hire On Facebook: popular, fun, cool (unique but to an acceptable degree) personalities with which viewers should really want to get to know and befriend Constant Management=24/7 Surveillance! How do we ever sleep?

Each generation has their own kind of language Bad means good Technology & the need for faster communication also creates new language Ur & lol are common Fashion also speaks a lot about who you are Got to be Polo How language patterns relate to stress: Everyone wants to fit in and be accepted Many people give into pressure of keeping up with new fads Having to deal with these always changing trends adds a great load to a person’s stress in terms of self-image and confidence

Millennial generation is defined by social media Almost everybody has a Facebook/Twitter & even had a MySpace Mark Zuckerberg (28) Created Facebook Dropped out of college and became a billionaire Social Media sites cause more stress to millennials than it seems Emotional statuses Did not get a lot of likes Not what you wanted to see Subtweets Because of Social Media’s popularity, many millennials mistake it for real life

The Millennials have survived through… First female supreme court Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor Bush presidency AIDS epidemic breaks out Repression ends; economic prosperity; soon recession follows First Woman on Moon, Sally Ride Clinton impeached for sex scandal September 11, twin towers The change from 1900's-2000's: Y2K Gulf War Rwanda, Darfur Genocide; Civil War in Syria (wipes out generation) First black president Killing of Osama Bin Laden; execution of Saddam Hussein Women can go into combat in USA VA Tech, Sandy Hook, Movie Shootings, Boston Marathon Human Genome project completed in 2000

Genres: Pop, Rap, House, Techno, Punk, Classic Rock More development in and fluid movement between established genres…  Indie, Alternative Rock, Alternative Country, Pop Country, Dubstep Artists: Larger # and greater range of popular artists than ever before Madonna, The Beatles, Sugar Ray, Weezer, Blink-182, Britney Spears, Eminem, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, John Legend, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Drake, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Rihanna, Adele, Lady Gaga, Radiohead, etc.

16 Faith, morality, & millennials
Young people are less traditionally religious than older generations HOWEVER They are also more spiritual than older generations, regarding faith as an inclusive, accepting inner element rather than an exclusive, rigidly structured attendance- keeping program Majority believe that morals are relative BUT, that does not mean that we are immoral or amoral

Summer plans Figuring out interests & pursuing right career Grad School?!? Teams, clubs, groups, volunteer work Supporting physical health on a minimal financial and time budget Men. Women. Relationships. Breakups. Interest, disinterest?
