1 How did Peppered Moth changed over time during industrial revolution?
Biston betularia Industrial Revolution

2 Objective: Understand How Peppered Moths changed over time during Industrial Revolution
Key Words: melanism, camouflage, accumulation of traits, differential reproduction QUESTIONS 1.What do you think eats peppered moths? 2. If the bark of the tree is dark and light colored moths come to rest on it, what do you think will happen? 3. What caused the trunks of many trees to turn from light to dark in Manchester (England)? 4. Which variety of moths increased after the Industrial Revolution? 5. Explain the reason for the increase in the number of dark colored moths. 6. What is the word we use to describe a change that makes its owner more likely to survive and reproduce? 7. What effect would cleaning up the environment have on the moths?

3 Aim: How did Peppered Moth changed over time during industrial revolution?
Do Now: Describe what you see in the pictures below Biston betularia

6 1. What do you think eats peppered moths?
2. If the bark of the tree is dark and light colored moths come to rest on it, what do you think will happen? 3. What caused the trunks of many trees to turn from light to dark in Manchester (England)? 4. How did the moth population change in the pre-industrial forest? 5. How did the moth population change in the post-industrial forest? 6. Explain the reason for the increase in the number of dark colored moths. 7. Predict what would occur if the forest were restored to its’ pre-industrial state. 8. What part of the theory of evolution is modeled in this simulation? 9. If all moths started out with the light color, what would have happened to the population in the post-industrial forest? 10. Why is it important to have variation in a species? 11. What effect would cleaning up the environment have on the moths? 12. Explain how the color of moths increases or decreases their chances of survival depending on the environment.

7 Growers of fruit trees have always had problems with insects. Insects can cause visible damage to fruits, making them less appealing to consumers. As a result of this damage, much of the fruit cannot be sold. Insecticides have been useful for the controlling theses insects, but in recent years, some insecticides have been much less effective. In same cases, insecticides do nothing to stop the insect attacks. Provide a biological explanation for this loss of effectiveness of the insecticide. In your answer, be sure to: 1. Identify the original event that resulted in the evolution of insecticide resistance in some insects. 2. Explain why the percentage of resistant insects in the population has increased. You must include and circle the following terms in your answer: gene, adaptation or adapted, variation, survival of the fittest.
