2 LIFE Neils was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 7, 1885 He earned a Master's degree in Physics in 1909 and his Doctor's degree in 1911 at the University of Copenhagen. Neils was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922 for his model of the atom and its structure, the most advanced of its time. 3 Neils Life Continued Neils Bohr also worked on the Manhattan Project and helped to develop the atomic bomb.

4 The Bohr Model Created in 1915 The atom is a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons that travel in circular orbits around the nucleus Proposed the idea of electron shells. Electrons are on different energy levels according to their state of excitement Electrons can move to the outer energy levels when excited, and can drop back down to its ground state when the energy is released. The electrons are quantized, meaning their energy keeps them on one energy level, and they can not be in between. Bohr also found that each energy level could only hold a certain number of electrons.

6 Experiments Leading to Discovery/ Experimental Data Supports Model Other scientists such as Ernest Rutherford set the stage for Bohr’s model with their earlier atomic models. Rydberg’s formula for spectral emission lines of hydrogen set the basis for and was fully proved by the Bohr Model. Bohr stated that the electron bound to the energy level would have energy levels that were quantized. Lois de Broglie proposed that electrons have a wave nature, which was proved through a series of experiments and helped to support Bohr’s model

7 Bohr model advances our knowledge of atomic structure Bohr’s model of the atom showed for the first time that electrons resided on energy levels according to their excitement. We learned that quantums, or the amount of energy needed to bump an electron up to the next energy levels keeps electrons on specific energy levels, and nowhere in between.
