Since the “sum” is the answer to an addition problem, I know I need to add. I know the sum is 47, so I give the unknown a variable, n. My equation is: 15 + n = 47 I use the inverse of addition, which is subtraction, to isolate the variable: 15-15 + n = 47–15. You have to do same operation on both sides of the equation to keep it balanced. So, n = 32.
