3 Concept Square of a Sum The square of a + b is o the square of a o plus twice the product of a and b o plus the square of b o (a + b) 2 = (a + b)(a + b)Ex: (x + 4) 2 = (x + 4)(x + 4) o = a 2 + 2ab + b 2 = x 2 + 8x + 16 Square of a Difference The square of a – b is o the square of a o minus twice the product of a and b o plus the square of b o (a – b) 2 = (a – b)(a – b)Ex: (x – 3) 2 = (x – 3)(x – 3) o = a 2 – 2ab + b 2 = x 2 – 6x + 9

4 Example 1 Square of a Sum Find (7z + 2) 2. (a + b) 2 = a 2 + 2ab + b 2 Square of a sum (7z + 2) 2 = (7z) 2 + 2(7z)(2) + (2) 2 a = 7z and b = 2 = 49z 2 + 28z + 4Simplify. Answer: 49z 2 + 28z + 4

Answer: The area of the square is 9x 2 + 72x + 144 square units. A = s 2 Area of a square A = (3x + 12) 2 s = (3x + 12) A = (3x) 2 + 2(3x)(12) + (12) 2 a = 3x and b = 12 A = 9x 2 + 72x + 144Simplify.
