1 HW: Get binder organized, if necessary. Open Book Quiz on Tuesday 12/8
HW: Get binder organized, if necessary. Open Book Quiz on Tuesday 12/8. Unit Test on Friday, 12/11 Current Events next Thursday Roll Call #13-16 Do Now: /4/ Take out Web quest HW. 2. Move into quiz positions, clear off your desk of everything EXCEPT HW.

2 After turning in the Quiz:
Label the shapes and draw arrows to show the direction of blood flow. *Add in the four chamber of the heart and the major vessels (aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein) Heart Body Lungs

3 Heart Right Atrium Left Atrium Body Lungs Right Ventricle Left
Pulm. vein Vena Cava Right Atrium Left Atrium Body Lungs Right Ventricle Left Ventricle Aorta Pulm. artery

4 Write a paragraph describing the pathway of blood through the body.
In your description be sure to use the following terms AND UNDERLINE THEM: Right atrium Body Right ventricle Lungs Left atrium Pulmonary Artery Left ventricle Pulmonary Vein Aorta Oxygen Poor Blood Vena Cava Oxygen Rich Blood

5 The Pathway of Blood First the oxygen poor blood moves into the right atrium through the vena cava. Next, the oxygen poor blood moves into the right ventricle. The blood then leaves the heart though the pulmonary artery and goes to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The oxygen rich blood then comes back to the heart through the pulmonary veins and flows into the left atrium. The blood next moves to the left ventricle and then goes out to the body cells through the aorta. The oxygen rich blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to all of the cells. After, the oxygen poor blood will flow back to the heart through veins, back to the Vena Cava and the process begins again.

6 Current Events!

7 Hypertension Description: consistent high blood pressure
Causes: age, birth control pills, medicines, pregnancy, kidney failure, thyroid disease etc. Symptoms: None (“silent killer”) Treatment: 1.Lifestyle changes: change diet, no smoking, less/no stress 2. Medication: diuretics, beta blockers etc. Risk Factors: Obesity )Ethnicity/Race Age )Gender 5) Excess Salt/Smoking/Alcohol

8 Atherosclerosis Description: artery walls thicken
(“hardening of the arteries”) plaque builds up inside your arteries. Causes: 1) exact cause is unknown 2) High amounts of fats and cholesterol in the blood 3) High blood pressure ) High blood sugar 5) Smoking Symptoms: none until severely narrows or blocks an artery Treatments: changing diet (DASH), stop smoking, take medications. Medical procedures (like angioplasty) What is cholesterol?: waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all cells of the body.

9 Arrhythmia Description: problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat Causes: electrical signals that control the heartbeat are delayed or blocked Symptoms: 1) Heart palpitations 2) A slow heartbeat 3) An irregular heartbeat 4) Feeling pauses between heartbeats Treatment: medicine, procedures, and surgery (pacemakers) What is atrial fribillation? Most common type of A-Fib. Involves a very fast/irregular contraction of atria. Normal Heart Rhythm Arrhythmia

10 Stroke Description: A stroke occurs if the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a portion of the brain is blocked. What causes an Ischemic Stroke?: Artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the brain becomes blocked. *Most common type What causes Hemorrhagic stroke? Artery in the brain leaks blood or bursts open Symptoms: numb on one side 3) confusion slurred speech 4) sudden weakness 5) Severe Headache Treatment: Get to a hospital immediately! medicines – blood thinners, surgery – to open blockage
