#27 Culture of… Term used by Pope John Paul II in his encyclical The Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae) in 1995. In response to Abortion and Euthanasia, etc. Page 132 2 Causes of Culture of Death 1. Misunderstanding of FREEDOM 2. materialism

#27 Freedom FALSE FREEDOM – ‘the ability to do whatever I want to do, whenever I want, wherever I want without any hindrances’. FREEDOM is a GIFT not an ABSOLUTE RIGHT TRUE FREDOM is a commitment to a choice which makes you grow. ADDICTS aren’t free.

#27 Conscience & Culture Conscience – an ‘Inner voice’ guided by reason and faith. We are obligated to follow a ‘well-informed’ conscience.

#28 Beginning-of-life issues DIRECT Abortion- deliberate/always obj. wrong INDIRECT Abortion- in the case of an ectopic pregnancy. - /morally tolerable. Principle of Double Effect- taught by pg 136 St. Thomas Aquinas (Dominican priest) 1. If the action is good or neutral 2. Good intention 3. Good outweighs the bad

#28 Artificial means of conception In vitro fertilization- fertilize ovum in a lab Artificial insemination (AI) – artificially implants sperm into woman. Surrogate motherhood – placing fertilized ovum into another woman’s womb. ALL WELL MEANING, but ALL morally flawed. Violates the ‘natural’ dignity of human sex.

#28 Other beginning-of-life issues… Pre-natal testing/diagnosis – Amniocentesis – amniotic fluid w/drawn Genetic engineering- manipulation of an embryo’s genetic coding Cloning – human life reduced to a commodity Stem-cell research-acceptable from adult or umbilical cord stem cells, not from abortion. GOOD INTENTIONS DON’T MAKE IT RIGHT

#29 End-of-Life issues EUTHANASIA - not “Youth in Asia” From the Greek (eu= good) + (thanasia = death) ‘to die a ‘good’ death… Direct involuntary euthanasia- unacceptable Intention may be NOBLE, but the ACT? INDIRECT voluntary euthanasia – acceptable. letting the person die. We are NOT required to use “EXTRAORDINARY” means to prolong our life. We are morally obliged to use ORDINARY means.

#29 Suicide A rejection of God’s absolute power over life and death. Mental illness often associated with suicide. Depression lessens the moral responsibility. crisis on campus

#30 The Death Penalty The Church opposes the death penalty because ALL life is sacred. (Even no so innocent life) Society can defend itself by ‘life in prison without parole’. Jesus was merciful and forgiving.
