3 Chapters 10-12 Highlights Work with your group to write the highlights from chapters 10, 11, and 12 in your notebook Chapter 10 – Pony tells the gang that Johnny is dead and that Dally is going to blow up “Johnny was the only thing Dally loved” (Hinton 152) – Dally robbed a grocery store – Dally raised an unloaded gun at the police and is shot by them Suicide by police – Pony passes out from a concussion and when he wakes up he can’t remember what happened right away

4 Chapters 10-12 Highlights Work with your group to write the highlights from chapters 10, 11, and 12 in your notebook Chapter 11 – Pony has to stay in bed for a week – Pony looks through Soda’s yearbook and found a picture of Bob and wonders if Bob’s parents hate him – Randy visits Pony and is insensitive to what happened – Pony denies that Johnny had anything to do with Bob’s death and repeats that Johnny is not dead

5 Chapters 10-12 Highlights Work with your group to write the highlights from chapters 10, 11, and 12 in your notebook Chapter 12 – At the court hearing Pony, Soda, and Darry are questioned – Pony struggles to adjust and becomes depressed Becomes forgetful, stops eating, struggles in school – Pony’s English teacher gives him an assignment to help his grade – While at a grocery store Pony encounters and threatens Socs “I didn’t feel anything – scared, mad, or anything. Just zero” (Hinton 170). – Pony and Darry fight about his grades, Dally, and Johnny Soda runs out and drops the letter he sent Sandy Pony finds out Soda wasn’t the father of Sandy’s baby Pony realizes that he’s acted uninterested in Soda’s problems – Darry and Pony find Soda Soda tells them he can’t take their fighting – When Pony picks up Gone with the Wind, he finds a letter from Johnny – Pony decides to tell the story of what happened – Book ends the same way it started

10 Identifying Theme Process – Pass out scratch paper to write on – Put your names on the scratch paper – List the topics Honor, Self-sacrifice, Innocence, Empathy, Division, Stereotypes, Loyalty – Pick a topic – Write a sentence about what the author believes about the topic The author believes … Can’t use characters’ names Can’t be specific to the book – Cross out “The author believes” – Revise Make sure the statement isn’t too vague – Family is good – Racism is bad – Repeat two more times
