2 Apparent (Ponyboy) “I had thought about turning ourselves in lots of times, but apparently the whole idea was a jolt to Dallas.” Apparent= Obvious

3 Bewilder (Ponyboy) “Johnny didn’t say anything. But he stared at the dashboard with such hurt bewilderment that I could have bawled.” (Ponyboy, receiving letter from Sodapop) ‘Sodapop? But how did he know…?’ “I said, bewildered.” Bewilder= Confusion

4 Conviction (Johnny, explaining why he waited to turn himself in) ‘I was scared,’ Johnny said with conviction.” Conviction= with belief

5 Elude (Ponyboy, after reciting the poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay) “ I was trying to find the meaning the poet had in mind, but it eluded me .” Elude= escape from

6 Implore (Ponyboy, when Johnny says they need to cut their hair) “ I looked at Johnny imploringly. Johnny sighed. ‘I’m gonna cut mine too…’ Implore= to beg

7 Indignant (Johnny, to Dally when he says he’s starving) ‘You’re starved?’ “Johnny was so indignant he nearly squeaked.” Indignant= Insulting, offensive

8 Reluctantly (Ponyboy, after receiving the Gone With The Wind book) ‘Gee, thanks.’ “I put the book down reluctantly. I wanted to start it right then.” Reluctantly= with hesitation

9 Sullen (Ponyboy, after Johnny’s statement about their hair, “I guess we’re disguised.”) “ I leaned back next to him sullenly. ‘Yeah, I guess so.’ Sullen= Sad

10 Testify (Johnny, explaining why he will turn himself in) “I ain’t got no record with the fuzz and it was self-defense. Ponyboy and Cherry can testify to that.” Testify= A court testimony (side of a story under oath, or where you cannot lie)

11 Vital (Ponyboy, seeing Dallas visit for the first time and realizing he was the only contact with the outside world) “…but right then [Dally] meant one thing: contact with the outside world. It became real and vital.” Vital= Important
