During courtship, the male can actually stimulate the female into urinating so he can perform the fertility taste test. If it is acceptable, the male attempts to mount her, though the female may not be completely receptive and try to evade the advances. The females tend to vie for the attention of older, stronger males while they prefer younger females. If a female is being courted by a male who does not suit her standards, she will string him along while looking for a better specimen to mate with, or eventually give up and mate with the male she has.

Page 10 in the notes packet What do you know about Stem Cell Research? Have you talked about it in other classes?
8
Unspecialized cells from which differentiated cells can develop Stem cells are in adults, but are more potent in a fetus Stem cells may be able to create all other cells in the body
9
Aborted fetuses are not the only source of stem cells There are stem cells in the both placenta and blood contained in the placenta. Also the primary source of stem cells is from blastocysts. These are fertilized human eggs that were not implanted into a woman.
10
DO NOT COPY: After fertilization, the human embryo develops into a hollow ball of cells known as a blastocyst. The actual body of the embryo develops from the inner cells mass, a cluster of cells inside the blastocyst. Because of their ability to differentiate into each of the body’s many cell types, these cells are known as embryonic stem cells
11
Used for the investigation of basic cells which develop organisms Cells are grown in a lab where tests are carried out
12
Pros: Could lead to a better treatment or cure of: ◦ Parkinson’s ◦ Alzheimer’s ◦ Heart diseases ◦ Birth defects ◦ Spinal cord injuries ◦ Replace or repair damaged organs ◦ Stem cells may play a major role in treating cancer Cons: ◦ “We should not mess with human life.” ◦ “We should not play God.” ◦ Cloning humans? ◦ Research can destroy the embryo
