2  Common Nouns: A common noun is a general, universal, basic, person, place, thing or idea.  Example:  alarm clock, homework, dough, (thing) hospital,  lake, school (place)  kids, boy, girl (person)

3  Proper Nouns: A proper noun is a very specific person, place, thing or idea. They are capitalized!  Example:  Mustang, Crest Toothpaste (thing)  Lake Michigan, JFK Middle School (place)  Catalina, Tom Brady (person)

4  Active Verbs: An active verb is a word that shows action and puts an object (a noun) into motion in a sentence.  Example:  The boy leapt out of bed.  The cow jumped over the moon.  Harry Potter dodged the lightning fast curse just in time and fired a Disarming Charm back in retaliation.

5  Helping Verbs: A helping verb is a word that aids or assists an active or main verb in the sentence.  Mrs. Paton might assign homework tonight.  I should do my homework tonight.  I will do my homework tonight.

6  am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been  have, has, had  shall, will, can  do, does, did  may, must, might  could, would, should

7  A linking verb is a word that connects the subject (beginning of a sentence) to the predicate (end of the sentence).  Examples:  The boy is joyful.  The story was superior.  The sun looked bright.
