DIFFUSION AND OSMOSIS

Objective: I will apply my knowledge of osmosis and diffusion to explain my lab observations. Drill: What do you think happens to a drop of food coloring when it is added to water and no one stirs it?

Brain POP http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandch emistry/diffusion/preview.weml

Diffusion  Particles moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Homeostasis  How our body stays balanced.

 How does diffusion help us maintain homeostasis?  Sugar/nutrients move into the cell  Removes waste out of the cell

Concentration Gradient  Particles moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Selectively Permeable  Small molecules can move through the membrane large particles cannot.

Osmosis  WATER moving through a cell membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Passive Transport  Does not require energy for particles to move across a cell membrane.

Active Transport  When cells use ATP energy to move molecules across a membrane.

Active Vs. Passive Transport  Which picture shows active transport?

Solution Types

Stations  Using your notes complete the 5 station activities.  The stations are not in order  You will have 8 minutes at each station  Do not move until the buzzer sounds!
