Lesson objectives By the end of this lesson you should: Have organised the evidence you have been collecting and planned an answer to a question on propaganda

How successful was Nazi propaganda? For homework you should have read: ‘How successful was Nazi propaganda?’ handout ‘The effectiveness of propaganda and indoctrination’ handout What key evidence/facts/figures/views did you note down? Use p.123-129 Layton to add to your evidence – facts and figures, also read the conclusion and note down key areas of success/failure (3 bullet points for each)

How successful was Nazi propaganda? Why might this be a tricky question to answer? Herzstein – important role in strengthening popular support for the regime. Mason – more sceptical especially in relation to the working class. Welch – argues that you need to separate different strands of propaganda – successful in overall support for Hitler – varied success in relation to other policies. Also adds that it was successful in reinforcing existing attitudes rather than countering views. Geary – successful when it played on traditional prejudices and values.

Clips about propaganda 5.5 mins long http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af44Slin 7lg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af44Slin 7lg 11 mins long http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg9a6bI s15Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg9a6bI s15Y

practice essay You are going to write out a rough plan to answer this question – what arguments/evidence could you use in each paragraph? ‘By 1939, the various forms of Nazi propaganda had made little impact on the German public.’ Explain why you agree or disagree with this view (24 marks)

Your task 1.Using your plan, your notes and the success criteria sheet, you are going to write up an answer to the question in 35mins 2.You are going to peer mark a partner’s answer, using the mark scheme to award a mark /24, a www and an ebi comment 3.When your answer is returned you can improve it based on the comments of your peer

paragraphs Introduction – How important propaganda was to the Nazis e.g. MoP set up (Goebbels) and what they were trying to achieve, types of propaganda, different degrees of success, views of historians not always in agreement Paragraph 1 ‘for’ – some propaganda was ‘counter-productive’ – e.g. newspapers leads to 10% drop in circulation, where they tried to challenge established beliefs e.g. Church Paragraph 2 ‘for’ – arguably the apparatus of the police state is what ensures people adhere to Nazi views rather than effective propaganda/Nazi views not accepted by all – especially the working classes who don’t buy into idea of a Volksgemeinschaft Paragraph 3 ‘against’ – Hitler Myth was effective, and support does increase/played on traditional German values Paragraph 4 ‘against’ – particularly successful with the youth who did not have entrenched views – Hitler Youth Conclusion – acknowledge the difficulty of measuring success, which argument is most important Make sure you answer the question – use examples from the presentations about the different forms of propaganda and the impact they did/didn’t have. Figures and facts

Success criteria Introduction Does it set up the debate and demonstrate knowledge of what the question is asking? Conclusion Does it lift the answer by summarising the arguments but then adding something more? Does it come to a judgement? Does it incorporate understanding of historical interpretations and debate? Paragraphs for and against Does the paragraph use the PEE structure? Does the paragraph answer the question clearly in its ‘explanation’? Does it use solid evidence to support its point e.g. statistics and examples?
