3 Presentation handouts : Section 1: Overview – In your own words, explain what you believe the purpose of the speech was. What was the writer’s exigence? Who was their intended audience? Section 2: Key Quotes – Select and correctly copy at least four key quotes that you feel are necessary to understand this speech and be persuaded by it. After copying each quote, interpret it in your own words and connect it back to the purpose / exigence of the speech. Section 3: Connection to Solidarity – As we discussed, speeches are often used to foster solidarity (a feeling of unity between people who have the same interests, goals, etc.). In your opinion, what was this writer trying to create solidarity around? Was he or she successful? Section 4: Focus on the appeals – give at least two examples of how the appeals were used in this text. Section 5: Style – Think about the rhetorical framework. What style tactics were most prominent in the text you read? Explain how.
