4. The Pilgrims: Plymouth Colony (Cape Cod, Massachusetts)
Next wave of colonies were founded for religious freedom
Protestant Reformation—not everyone in England wanted to be Protestant, some people dissented (disagree with a belief).
Pilgrims were Protestant, but they wanted to separate from the Church of England (Anglican Church)—separatists
Pilgrims were persecuted because of their beliefs in England—so many left England for America.

5. Pilgrims Seek Religious Freedom
They got permission to establish their own colony in Virginia.
September 1620 – Over 100 men, women, and children board the Mayflower and head to North America.
They land on the shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

7. The Pilgrims set up an agreement called the Mayflower Compact.
In it, they agreed to ask each other about the laws they would create and enforce, and they promised to work together.

10. Massachusetts Bay Colony (1628)
Founded by Puritans who traveled to America to put their religious beliefs into practice.
Puritans wanted to “reform” or make the Anglican Church better.
Governor and leader was John Winthrop.
They settled mainly in Boston.
The Puritans were not tolerant of people who did not follow their strict Puritan beliefs.
This lack of tolerance (acceptance of others) led people to form new colonies.

11. Connecticut (1636) Founded by a minister Thomas Hooker.
He did not like the intolerance of the Puritans and formed a colony
Mainly settled in the Connecticut River Valley and formed the town of Hartford.

12. His colony was based on democratic principles.
Adopted Fundamental Orders of Connecticut—the USA’s first written constitution!

13. Rhode Island
Forced out of Massachusetts, Roger Williams (minister) felt that government should not force people to worship a certain way.
He forms the colony of Rhode Island.
The colony became known for religious tolerance.
The main town is Providence

14. New Hampshire
Inspired by Roger Williams, John Wheelwright led a group of dissenters to New Hampshire to form an independent colony.
They were also escaping persecution in Massachusetts.
The main town will be Exeter.

15. Native Americans: Help & Conflict
Native Americans help settlers, but conflict arose.
Problems over land
King’s Phillip War
First war between Natives and settlers, lasts 14 months
It destroyed Native American power in New England, as the colonists won.
Colonial settlement expanded
