Welcome to the Year 1 Phonics workshop

What is “Phonics”?  Phonics is the way in which children learn to read and spell.  A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound.  Throughout Reception and Year 1 children learn the 44 phonemes and how to blend them.

Why a phonics test?  The phonics test highlights your child’s progress in phonics and helps the teacher build a clearer picture of what they need to learn next.  It is a statutory test that all children in the UK must complete during year 1.  The tests will be completed during the week beginning 15 th June.  There is a re-test in Year 2 for any children who do not pass.

What is the test? The test consists of 40 real and pseudo (alien) words that the children must read. Last year the pass mark was 32/40 words! You will be informed of your child’s score.

Why pseudo words? We use pseudo words because they show us the children’s pure understanding of phonics rather than memorising or recognising real words.

Example of test?
