3 3 Reflection of Practical Session To identify the key terms used in skill acquisition. To develop an awareness of the basic principles of skill acquisition. To develop an awareness of coaching as a process and the need to have knowledge of all the elements of the process. To incorporate the principles of skill development through your coaching

4 4 Practical session - Coaching Process The coaching process includes everything that is done within coaching practice. The practical session covered: –Observation –Analysis –Feedback In groups identify the key points for the areas shown above Knowledge of these areas within the coaching process will help to make your coaching sessions more effective

5 5 Observation & Analysis - What Tools Did We Use? A mental picture A system for analysis Ability to compare & contrast Coaching tools to modify performance

7 7 The Positive Approach Does mean an attitude you communicate to others Does mean avoiding unrealistic expectations Does mean sending messages which contain useful information Does not mean continuous feedback / praise

8 8 Review of Feedback Why do we give feedback? Questions to support feedback - Where did the ball contact your boot? -Tell me how much force you applied to that kick? -How did you decide which kick to use? Types of feedback: –Visual – Audio – Kinaesthetic

9 9 Skill Acquisition Glossary of Terms Skill - The ability to select the appropriate technique at the right time in the right environment Technique - the ability to replicate a given task on demand

10 10 Skill Acquisition Glossary of Terms Skill acquisition – the process of acquiring new skills through practice Skill retention – the ability of a performer to retain the learned skill over a period of time Skill – the ability of a performer to use the technique in a variety of different environments.

11 11 Phases of Learning and Learning Styles Beginner Intermediate Advanced

12 12 Distribution of Practice Massed practice – This involves large amount of repetition of the same technique with no, or minimal, alterations between each one. For example, the golfer hitting 100 balls on the driving range with the same club Blocked practice – a technique is repeated a set number of times (ie a block) then a different variation of the technique (or a different technique) is repeated for a block. For example, the basketball player shoots a block of 10 free throws, then 10 jump shots then 10 3-point shots etc Variable practice – a technique is executed once then a different technique (or variation of the same technique) is practiced Random practice – as variable but the forthcoming technique to be executed should be selected at random and not pre-prescribed.
