- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 2 Joint Task Force on Environmental Indicators  Origin Set up by the Committee on Environmental Policy (CEP) and the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) in 2009  Mandate Improve environmental data collection and reporting in EECCA and SEE Promote comparability of environmental statistics and indicators in the UNECE region  Functioning JTF comprises environmental experts and statisticians from the UNECE region, with a focus on EECCA and SEE Held 7 face-to-face meetings (Aug 2009 to Nov 2012) Reviewed total of 35/36 indicators covered by the Indicator Guidelines http://www.unece.org/env/documents/2007/ece/ece.belgrade.conf.2007.inf.6.e.pdf Proposed 16 additional indicators not covered in the Indicator Guidelines Strong cooperation with the EEA, UNSD, IEA, Eurostat and other IOs

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 3 National reviews (questionnaire) The national reviews include the following information concerning the environmental indicators: (i) Inter-agency cooperation (ii) Statistical publications and state-of-the-environment reports (iii) Data quality assurance and control (iv) Time-series data on the indicators starting from 1990 to date

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 8 Additional indicators (1 session) New indicator on environment protection  Indicator of environment expenditures JTF recommended to countries to use the indicator as presented in document ECE/CEP- CES/Ge.1/2010/3 (1 session) Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013) New agri-environment indicators  Water-use intensity by agriculture  Cropping and livestock patterns  Gross nitrogen balance Approved (6 session) - title changed to “Irrigation” Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013) Not approved Approved (6 session) Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013)

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 9 Additional indicators (1-2 sessions) New energy and environment indicators  Final electricity consumption  Gross electricity production  Efficiency of conventional electricity and heat production Approved at the 2 session Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013) Approved at the 2 session Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013) JTF considered premature to use this indicator at present/JTF made a proposal to consider developing an indicator, which allows assessing progress in using new technologies for fuel combustion at power stations

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 10 Additional indicators (3-4 sessions) New water (inland and seawater) indicators  Total water use  Public water supply  Connection to public water supply  Population connected to wastewater treatment  Wastewater treatment facilities  Concentration of pollutants in coastal seawater and sediments (except nutrients) All indicators - Approved (5 session) Revision needed (Guidelines update) Data to be collected at 7 session

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 11 Additional indicators (4-5 sessions) New biodiversity indicators  Biosphere reserves and wetlands of international importance  Invasive alien species  Catches of fish and other aquatic animals and products Approved (5 session) Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013) Approved (5 session) Data to be collected at 8 session (Nov 2013) Not approved

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide 12 Further work by the JTF – Core set  JTF to develop a core set of indicators to allow regular collection of data Identify a core set of indicators among the indicators already collected Possible criteria: where most countries have data and where quality is good  JTF could complement the ongoing work of the EEA on developing a core set of indicators for the ENPI-SEIS countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and the Russian Federation)
