2 WHAT IS “A BUCKET LIST”? “Kick the bucket” is an English idiom ( 成语 ). “Kick the bucket” means to die. “He was so sick, I was worried he was going to kick the bucket!” “I was hit in the head! It hurt so much, I was scared I might kick the bucket!”

3 BUT WHAT IS A “BUCKET LIST”? A bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket – before you die! Anything could be on this list – anything that you want to accomplish. “I want to visit Europe! I will put traveling to Europe on my bucket list.”

4 “A BUCKET LIST” “Before I die, I want to see an NBA game. Seeing an NBA game is on my bucket list.”

5 “A BUCKET LIST” “Sometime in my life I want to write a novel! Writing a novel is on my bucket list.”

6 “A BUCKET LIST” “Before I die, I want to go scuba diving. Going scuba diving is on my bucket list!”

7 “GOALS” If we are talking about our bucket lists, we can also talk about our goals ( 目标 ). Goals are things that we really want to do! “Climbing a mountain is one of my goals!” “Learning to play the guitar is one of my goals!”

8 TALKING ABOUT GOALS We can talk about our goals as being: Short term (something you will do soon ) Long term (something you will do a long time from now ) “I want to learn how to ride a bike. This is one of my short term goals!

9 SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM? “I want to become president!”

10 SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM? “I want to buy a cat!”

11 SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM? “I want to have a successful company!”

12 SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM? “I want to learn how to skateboard!”

13 TALKING ABOUT GOALS We can talk about our goals as being: Probable: something that you think will happen Improbable: something you think isn’t very likely

14 PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE? “I want to travel to the moon!”

15 PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE? “I want to go to the grocery store!”

16 PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE? “I want to see a movie at the cinema!”

17 PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE? “I want to win the lottery!”

18 WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? What are your goals? What is on your bucket list? Tell me your ideas and I will put five examples on the board! We will try to decide if these goals are: Short term or long term Probable or improbable

19 TODAY’S VOCABULARY Short term Long term Probable Improbable Goal

20 WRITE YOUR BUCKET LIST! It’s time to write your own bucket list! Write down three of your goals! Say whether these goals are short term or long term. Say whether these goals are probable or improbable. Afterward we will share with the class!

21 WRITE YOUR BUCKET LIST! “My goal is to travel to ten different countries! I think that if I save up enough money this is a very probable goal. However, this will take a long time to accomplish – this is a long-term goal!”

22 WRITE YOUR BUCKET LIST! “My goal is to get good grades on my exams. The exams are happening soon, so this is a short term goal. However, I don’t study very much so this is very improbable!”

23 WRITE YOUR BUCKET LIST! “My goal is to learn to drive a car. This is a short-term goal, since I plan to begin practicing soon. It is also a very probable goal, since I am a very quick learner!”

24 WRITE YOUR BUCKET LIST! It’s time to write your own bucket list! Write down three of your goals! Say whether these goals are short term or long term. Say whether these goals are probable or improbable. Afterward we will share with the class!
