1 Wednesday 23 rd March 2011 Organisational Structures within Your small business & Santander Year 10 Business

2 Criteria: M1 compare the main job roles and functions in two organisations and explain how they may differ in different organisational structures What type of information do I require? Task For P2, you should have identified at least two different organisational structures that are commonly found in local business organisations. Two of them should be for Santander and one should be for your work experience organisation that you completed for h/w. If you didn’t do work experience you could use Manningham Sports Centre (see the u-drive). You should have covered at least two of the structures from the list below; all 5 should have been identified in your PowerPoint. Organisational structures: e.g. hierarchical, flat, matrix, functional, divisional Where will I get the information from? Text-book – page 100-101 / teacher notes / search engines Evidence you must produce: PowerPoint explaining Job roles and functions in Santander A PowerPoint explaining the 5 organisational structures: hierarchical, flat, matrix, functional and divisional At least 2 organisational structures produced using PowerPoint for Santander & a separate one for your smaller business organisation Now look at M1 Criteria:

3 Task 3 For M1, learners should build on the work they completed for P1, comparing the main job roles and functions in Santander & their small business. You must compare the main job roles and functions in Santander and your small business and explain how these may differ within the two structures. For example, a team leader or department supervisor in a small supermarket with a flat structure may perform a very different role to a team leader in a large manufacturing organisation with a matrix structure based on self-managing teams. You should understand that although individuals in different businesses within different structures may have similar titles, their job roles and functions may be very different. It is recommended that you choose at least one small organisation with a simple organisational structure to facilitate comparisons with a larger organisation with a more complex structure. This provides evidence for M1 – see pages 100-101 for help COMPARE / CONTRAST Identify the main factors that apply in two or more situations and explain the similarities and differences or advantages and disadvantages.

4 Task 4 For D1, you should build on the work completed for M1, analysing the relationship between job roles, functions and an organisation’s structure. You need to understand why an organisational structure exists. It is a way of organising the workforce to ensure that the organisation’s aims and objectives are met. This will allow you to analyse the importance of job roles within the structure and the functions that are performed. The structure, if organised correctly, allows each department, section or company to achieve its objectives in a cost-effective manner. You need to use illustrative examples to explain your analysis, which should be drawn from the two organisations studied in P1 and P2 – Santander and your own business. This provides evidence for D1
