ROCKET PROPULSION PRINCIPLE OF A SINGLE STAGE ROCKET Hot gas produced by burning solid or liquid fuel in a combustion chamber is ejected through an opening at the back of the rocket.This produces a backward momentum and the rocket acquires an equal forward momentum.The velocity acquired by the rocket depends on the velocity of the exhaust gas.

8. MUTISTAGE ROCKET With single stage rocket, the maximum velocity attained is of the order of 4.6km/s. For obtaining higher velocities the rocket is designed in stages.When the fuel of the first stage is exhausted the rocket casing is detached and dropped off, and the second stage is ignited.
