Biotic Interactions Review Test Date: October 9 th, 2015

1. Which part of photosynthesis do humans benefit from? O 2 = oxygen

2. Which part of photosynthesis represents the food for the plant? C 6 H 12 O 6 = glucose

3. Identify the ELEMENTS in the following equation: 6H 2 O + 6CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2  H = hydrogen  O = oxygen  C = carbon

4. Super Brain Question! How many ATOMS are in the equation 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O = C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 ? For 6CO 2, Think: (1 carbon + 2 oxygen) x 6 = 3x6 =18 18 + 18 = 24 + 12 36 = 36 Reactants = 36 atoms Products = 36 atoms The atoms are the same. They just re-group!

5. What type of energy transfer occurs during photosynthesis? Radiant energy becomes chemical energy

6. Use the photosynthesis equation to fill in the boxes below. 6CO 2 Carbon dioxide 6H 2 O water C 6 H 12 O 6 glucose 6O 2 oxygen

7. Energy Pyramid Producers = grass wheat 1 st level = rabbit mouse grasshopper termite 2 nd level = mouse snake shrew woodpecker fox 3 rd level = fox

8. Vocabulary Matching __ C ___ 1. Ecosystem __ D ___ 2. Food Chain __ G ___ 3. Omnivore __ I ___ 4. Producer __ J ___ 5. Consumer __ E __ 6. Food Web __ F ___ 7. Herbivore __ A ___ 8. Carnivore __ B ___ 9. Decomposer __ H ___10. Photosynthesis

9. What is the process that starts a food web? Photosynthesis What is the main source of energy in an energy pyramid? That’s the same sun from the other slide!

10. What did the Gatorade activity demonstrate? It showed how energy is lost as it moves up the energy pyramid from one level to the next.

11. Decomposers Decomposers are organisms that break down organic material. They are important, because they return nutrients to the soil. worms bacteria fungi

12. Scavengers Scavengers are animals that feed off the dead bodies of other animals. Buzzards (top) and vultures (bottom) clean up ecosystems and recycle the energy.

13 & 14. Autotroph and Heterotroph An autotroph is an organism that makes its own food. auto = self; It makes food for itself. A heterotroph gets its food by consuming another organism. hetero = different It gets its food from a different organism.

15. Biodiversity vs. Monoculture biodiversity: the variety of species living in an area; the more species there are, the greater the biodiversity monoculture: an area where only one species lives (prefix “mono” = one)

16. How does biodiversity contribute to the sustainability of an ecosystem? Biodiversity makes an ecosystem more sustainable. If one species is lost, the ecosystem can still survive. (Remember the Douglas Firs activity!)

17 – 21 Food Webs Producer = red Consumer = blue Predator/ prey = green

Producer = red Consumer = blue Predator/ prey = green

22. Food Chain example

23. Energy Pyramid the flow of energy Producers Primary Consumers Secondary Consumers 3 rd Level Consumers Decomposers Scavengers

Sixth Grade Review I thought this was 7 th grade, but whatever.

24. Energy Transformation energy transformation: the process of changing energy from one form to another

24. & 25. Elements and Compounds  element: any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.  compound: two or more elements chemically bonded together in a set ratio

26. Manipulated (independent) and responding (dependent) variables Keeping the lights on for different amounts of time each day affected the number of eggs chickens laid. Does the amount of time the lights are on depend on the number of eggs laid? OR Does the number of eggs laid depend on the amount of time the lights are on? Number of eggs depends on amount of time lights are on, so…  Dependent = number of eggs laid  Independent = amount of time lights are on

YOU WILL DO GREAT ON THIS TEST!
