Overview of Cellular Respiration Notes 1g. The role of the mitochondria in making stored chemical-bond energy available to cells by completing the breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide.

Objectives Describe the process of cellular respiration. Compare cellular respiration to photosynthesis.

Vocabulary Cellular Respiration Aerobic

Cellular respiration makes ATP by breaking down sugars.

Cellular respiration Process of producing ATP by breaking down carbon-based molecules when oxygen is present.

Aerobic Requires oxygen to occur.

Mitochondria, found in both plant and animal cells, produce ATP through cellular respiration.

Cellular respiration is like a mirror image of photosynthesis.

When oxygen is available, ATP is produced by cellular respiration in mitochondria. (Chemical equation on board)

The products of photosynthesis – sugars and O 2 – are the reactants in cellular respiration. (Figure on board)
