E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 Industry-Driven Initiative on Advanced Materials & Nano for Low Carbon Energy EMIRI – Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative Dr Fabrice Stassin - Managing Director fabrice.stassin@emiri.eu www.emiri.eu

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 EMIRI works for the future of Advanced Materials for low carbon energy (LCE) in Europe 2 * * Founding / current members

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 3 Power sector will have to contribute more than others to reduce CO2 emissions, mostly through renewables

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 Advanced Materials are a Key Enabling Technology to accelerate transformation of EU energy system  Cost of low carbon energy technologies must keep coming down to ensure their adoption & deployment across EU  This is made possible by reduction in cost, increase in performance, and extension of lifetime of the Advanced Materials enabling these low carbon energy technologies 4 Example for battery cells

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 EU must establish Industrial Leadership in Advanced Materials for low carbon energy because... 5  Capacity for production of low carbon energy is already developing outside EU  Manufacturing of devices, components, Advanced Materials is moving to end-markets (leading to emergence of new champions often at expense of historical players)  Innovation centers are also following the trend with some delay  This creates future dependency risks on imported low carbon energy technologies

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 Europe-based Industry of Advanced Materials for low carbon energy represents more jobs than any renewable energy value chain in Europe * 6 * IRENA 2015 (International Renewable Energy Association)  Europe-based Industry of Advanced Materials for low carbon energy estimated at over 100.000 direct jobs (500.000 direct & indirect jobs)  Jobs in Advanced Materials for low carbon energy represent around 50% of total EU- based jobs in renewable energy when comparing on the direct & indirect jobs basis  This is in line with the historical strengths and long presence of our Industry in Europe  Leadership needs to be preserved Jobs in Europe (direct & indirect)

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 Innovation is key to Industrial Leadership of EU in Advanced Materials for low carbon energy  EMIRI supports the development in EU of policies crucially needed for the market pull & the technology push (innovation) of the low carbon energy technologies  EMIRI calls for an Innovation Pillar bridging the gap between research and market  The Innovation Pillar will reduce innovation risks and accelerate innovation to reach faster and better the market  The Innovation Pillar should be based on strong public private interactions and engage actors along the value chain  The Innovation Pillar will be developed in frame of an Industry- Driven Initiative (IDI) in collaboration with the European Commission and in line with future SET Plan Governance 7

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 8 Achieving the specific R&I objectives of the IDI will contribute to … 1.Getting the right Advanced Materials faster to the market by addressing the three typical innovation risks (execution, adoption and co-innovation risks) 2.Accelerating the development & deployment of low carbon energy technologies enabled by Advanced Materials (contributing to tackle Energy Union Challenges) 3.Enabling more competitive and longer value chains to drive competitiveness of the EU Industrial Sector of Advanced Materials for Energy and restore Industrial Leadership of EU (contributing to tackle EU Manufacturing Challenges of 20% of EU GDP from manufacturing by 2020) 4.Securing R&D and capital investments of the Industry in EU 5.Safeguarding & creating quality jobs in EU for operators, researchers, engineers Conservative estimate of Europe-based industry of Advanced Materials for low carbon energy and its potential for policy-driven growth

E NERGY M ATERIALS I NDUSTRIAL R ESEARCH I NITIATIVE Bridging the Innovation Gap EMIRI – General Presentation – October 2015 The Innovation Pillar builds on orientations strongly & widely supported by Industry & Research  Max of 20 Innovation Topics are part of the Innovation Pillar (TRL 4 – 7)  Innovation Topics are in line with industrial capabilities & needs, while supporting KPIs outlined in SET Plan Integrated Roadmap  Industry & Research organizations are ready to commit to the Innovation Pillar and leverage EU public funding to create meaningful impact  Budget (600 Meuro) spread over 4 Key Components (20% KC1, 30% KC2, 35% KC3, 15% KC4)  Impact in line with technology cycle & market cycle of Advanced Materials (60% of impact expected by 2025) 9
