11 Beijing is in the north of China. It is a large city in the world. It has over 12 million people. The history is long. The climate is mild. Beijing is famous for Peking Opera and the Great Wall. 15 (Optional reading) Writing samples 1. My motherland My motherland, the People’s Republic of China, is in the east of hemisphere. It covers an area of 9.6 million square kilometers. Our country has a long history. In this vast land there live more than a billion brave and industrious people. My motherland is rich in natural resources. Before the liberation, China was a poor country. Under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese people drove out the foreign invaders and won the independence. They have been making great progress in socialist construction since then. Now we are carrying out the open-door policy to build our country into a powerful socialist country with four modernizations. Our country will surely make a greater contribution to the mankind.

16 2. My Hometown My hometown lies in the Plain of North China. And the famous Grand Canal runs through our village in the east. I often played with my friends on the bank of the canal, watching the passing boats when I was young. There are about 800 people in our village. People’s living condition has been greatly improved. A pond, which teams with fish, lies in front of the village, where I spent my happy days. I used to swim there in summer and skate in winter. Between the canal and our village is an orchard. People plant all kinds of fruit trees there, such as plum, apple, orange, cherry and so on. When autumn comes, you can smell the sweet odor miles away.

17 The village began to know the importance of knowledge years ago. Every evening people go to the evening school to learn science. Last year there were forty students who graduated from high school and eighteen of them went to college. If you want to come to our village for a visit, it will be convenient because there are two roads in front of our village. Welcome to my hometown !

18 3.Binhai ( 滨海市 ) Binhai is an newly-built city with a population of about 600,000 and covers an area of about 3,000 square kilometers. The city, which faces the Yellow Sea in the east, used to be a small fishing town. Great changes have taken place in the city since 1978. many new factories have been set up. Two ports have been built, which are connected with many big cities both at home and abroad. The railway line completed in 1986 leads to many big cities of the country. Education in Binhai is developing quickly. Two colleges have been founded. A lot of foreign businessmen are interested and have invested in the city. Binhai has taken on a new look.
