15. (Optional reading) Writing samples 1. My motherland My motherland, the People’s Republic of China, is in the east of hemisphere. It covers an area of 9.6 million square kilometers. Our country has a long history. In this vast land there live more than a billion brave and industrious people. My motherland is rich in natural resources. Before the liberation, China was a poor country. Under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese people drove out the foreign invaders and won the independence. They have been making great progress in socialist construction since then. Now we are carrying out the open-door policy to build our country into a powerful socialist country with four modernizations. Our country will surely make a greater contribution to the mankind.

16. 2. My Hometown My hometown lies in the Plain of North China. And the famous Grand Canal runs through our village in the east. I often played with my friends on the bank of the canal, watching the passing boats when I was young. There are about 800 people in our village. People’s living condition has been greatly improved.
