ALEXA CARRASCO A PLAN FOR A 2 ND GRADE CLASSROOM LIBRARY

FRANK SERAFINI In Frank Serafini’s book Reading aloud and beyond: Fostering the Intellectual Life With Older Readers, he describes the importance of reading and setting the stage for reading. Part of setting the stage is having a welcoming classroom library area ranging in different book genres and levels. Image: http://img2.imagesbn.com/p/9780325005225_p0_v1_s260x420.jpg

SETTING THE STAGE FOR READ ALOUDS Read alouds set as foundation for studies. Teachers must respond to literature in a positive way. Get students to think about the text and comprehend it, teacher should ask students to respond. Do not force students Have students question and reflect what has happened in the book. Relate to real life. The classroom community makes or breaks a read- aloud (Serafini).

SELECTING LITERATURE Consult professional resources. Does the book relate to classroom curriculum? Discover new books! Make sure book works well in either Silent Sustained Reading or group read- aloud READ THE BOOK BEFOREHAND Image: http://www.busyteacherscafe.com/literacy/images/rk8_teacher2.gif

MY CLASSROOM LIBRARY One of my favorite books that is perfect for read-alouds and SSR is The Magic Tree House series! Each student will have a “reading passport” and will get a stamp for every chapter book they read http://www.rainbowresource.co m/products/021463.jpg

THEME: MAGIC TREE HOUSE Display: 3D paper tree with treehouse on the wall. This doubles as a bulletin board with the ladders on the tree house incorporating goals Storage: bowls that look like coconuts and have AR labels Magic Tree House books have a special “Read-Aloud Island” (shelf) Space: spacious circle area in back of room with world map carpet and beanbags chairs. Large chair for read-alouds.

The treehouse started to spin... faster and faster... then everything was still
