7 Enterprise ArchitecturePage 7 Enterprise Architecture Modeling ► Modeling provides tangible artifacts (models) that allow business and IT decision makers to allocate funding and implement projects that will deliver the most value to the organization ► Models represent various aspects of the organization, including both the current and target states of the enterprise ► Through modeling, business analysts can identify resources with poor value, obsolete processes and technologies, and existing gaps in business or IT capabilities

8 Enterprise ArchitecturePage 8 Business and IT Integration ► Enterprise Architecture becomes a critical component during business and IT integration activities ► Having a clear representation of two organizations business, IT, and infrastructure components allows the decision makes to plan and implement a target architecture ► Poor current-state architecture and models will lead to undue stress, confusion, and increased cost during integration activities ► An organization’s ability to react quickly to external factors (such as business and/or IT integrations) is directly influenced by the maturity and accuracy of its EA models

11 Enterprise ArchitecturePage 11 A case study: Motorola (cont.) ► Telelogic System Architect ► Graphic models and their underlying information created and stored in a relational database ► Users build the models working together in teams on the network ► As one user opens a model artifact to edit it, other users get a read-only version of this artifact ► Users can check out multiple artifacts so that they can work on sections of the architecture without anyone else modifying it while they work on it ► A SQL-based query reporting language enables users to build and run reports to answer questions about the information they have modeled ► what business processes are related to what organizational goals ► what applications are used to perform what business processes ► what business processes operate on what data entities ► what user has modified what information on what date ► etc

12 Enterprise ArchitecturePage 12 A case study: Motorola (cont.) ► Project team developed complex models of Symbol’s enterprise architecture ► Each element (system, database, application, etc) was depicted, along with its use (upstream and downstream) and interactions with other systems ► Integration team used the information stored in System Architect to evaluate the existing landscape and develop a plan for integration into Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility business unit
