Hockey SA Changes Hockey – the game for everyone! 2015 Achievements Zero staff turnover for the past 15 months Improved filing systems put in place Emergency evacuation plans on display Grounds staff now sport & asthma first aid trained Updated technology, processes and consistency in staffing Liquor license compliant; re-accredited at Level 3 Good Sports; 20+ staff RSA trained $350k spent on SHC facilities in 2015 14 new policies + 14 new procedures put in place New corporate sponsors and ORS SRDIP grants to invest in hockey Recognised as one of the better governed sports in the state – with particular strength around board gender balance. Chair invited to speak on ORS panel of women leaders in sport. CEO invited to contribute to re-write of ORS resource for new SSO Board members.

To be repeated in 2015. 2013 BDO governance review (funded by ORS). Most actions arising from these have been implemented. 2015/16 External Board Review (funded by ORS) planned. Re-vamp of Governance section on website completed this week: Board committee & MCC terms of reference and President Forum presentations added to section with Board minutes, board member profiles, annual reports, AGM info.

Club governance - STARCLUB Hockey – the game for everyone! 25 questions/criteria covering: ‘well managed’, coaches & officials, volunteers, positive & welcoming and safe for all. 15 of 25 questions are required purely for legal compliance. Looked at by ORS that they look at when evaluating grant submissions. Current accreditations (September 2015): – 1 Recognised STARCLUB – Risdon HC (Port Pirie). – 7 Clubs with Provisional status – 13 other Clubs at >17/25 criteria met

10. Club governance – Good Sports Hockey – the game for everyone! Good Sports accreditation is important external recognition for clubs having processes in place that minimise risk of alcohol related incidents and promote safe drinking – which is an important risk mitigant for club management committees. Current accreditations (May 2015): – L3 – Hockey SA, Whyalla HA, Forestville – L2 – 6 regional clubs/associations – L1 – 11 clubs/associations – Overdue or withdrawn – 10 clubs/associations

11. Strategy Hockey – the game for everyone! Hockey SA ‘Strategy 2014’ is on the website. Mid-2014 review of ‘Strategy 2014’ and a new short-term Strategic Plan: – Reviewed by Board in Dec 2014 – Approved by Board in Feb 2015 – Status against strategy tabled in at Board – 72% complete New 2015-20 Strategic Plan is presently being developed: – Board strategy day held in June 2015 – 4 of 7 (Overarching, Athlete, Coach, Destination Hockey) components of the strategy reviewed by Board Oct 2015 – 1 component (Umpire) to be reviewed Dec 2015 and the balance to come in 2016

14. Code of Conduct reminder Hockey – the game for everyone! Codes of conduct exist in HA MPP for: – Athletes/Players – Coaches – Officials – Spectators Numerous provisions under Constitution, Regulations and Rules to discipline those in breach. Social Media policy. Hockey WA fine clubs $3k per breach. Hockey SA policy under review. Breaches of CofC have historically had significant impact on staff morale/turnover and umpire retention. Now have 3 commissioners to be able to hear matters.

16. National Initiatives Hockey – the game for everyone! Destination Hockey. Insurance program under review. Main change will be timing. High Performance Program 2017-24 review – workshop held in September involved SASI & Hockey SA. National Participation workshop held 27-28 October. Hook in 2 Hockey program under review. 2016 pilot. Will take until 2017 to see full results. Hockey SA Schools Outreach program under review to consider model/s implemented interstate. 2016 pilot. Hockey Vic strong inclusion programs with LGBT, disability and multi-cultural. Hockey Qld strong inclusion programs with indigenous.

17. Destination Hockey Hockey – the game for everyone! A collaborative whole-of-sport approach to promoting hockey, engaging with participants and getting more people into the game based around the 2016 Olympic Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games. Some components: – Hockey ‘hubs’ – clubs, schools, etc – Resources from Hockey Australia to promote hockey – National Hockey Week around May/June 2016 To be launched late 2015.

18. State / ORS initiatives Hockey – the game for everyone! STARCLUB accreditation Inclusion and diversity – to be subject of Hockey SA grant submission this year. Open to club ideas re initiatives. Good Sports – Clubs with bar facilities ought to be able to achieve Level 3 accreditation RSA training – Hockey SA hosting twice a year and will pay for up to 2 people per club/assoc. a year to attend. 5 clubs / associations have gone through training with us this year. Water & energy efficiency. ORS pilot training course on in Nov.

19. Umpire Development Hockey – the game for everyone! Almost 200 umpire accreditations over the past 2 years. New Umpire Pathway Strategy 90% complete. For review at December Board meeting. Seeking funding under ORS SRDIP grant program to support this new umpiring structure and implementation. Expect to appoint around 4 Umpire Coaches for 2016. Umpire development policy drafted. Umpire allocation procedure prepared. Umpire coaching feedback form in process. Focus on developing more senior female umpires. Planning a calendar of PD nights in 2016 which will be published early 2016. Survey of PL coaches/panel umpires about umpires will go out this week.

20. Coach Development Hockey – the game for everyone! Over 120 coach accreditations over the past 2 years. Level 1 accreditation courses being run at clubs on request. 5 completed in 2015: Adelaide, Adelaide Uni, Burnside, Forestville, North East. Grant received to support travel costs for regional coaches in support of level 1/2 coach accreditations. AHL Pathway Coach – Hockey SA paid for Kris Schiller (Port Adelaide) & Nicole Mentha (North East) to attend AHL training sessions and participate with AHL team for 4 days of tournament. Todd Kitto (Seacliff) employed part-time as SASI Pathway coach. Exposure and training provided through Vic Inst Sport sessions; Tas Inst Sport sessions; attending U21 men’s championships. Supporting ORS coach development program for 2 sub-elite coaches in 2016.

21. Coach Development Hockey – the game for everyone! Darren Neimke (Seacliff) visit to Perth national training program (2014). Sportscode training provided to Melody Cooper (Adelaide), Mark Victory (Port Adelaide), Darren Neimke (Seacliff), Ian Jennings (Adelaide) and Todd Kitto (Seacliff). Hockey SA paid for Level 2 coaching course for Cameron Joyce (Port Adelaide), Carly Simms (Port Adelaide), Matt Morton (Seacliff), Todd Kitto (Seacliff), Brodie Gleeson (Grange), Emily Grist (Burnside), Maddi Spano (Burnside). PD nights : AHL review; Graham Reid presentation; World Cup review; Toni Cronk GK. Focus on developing more senior female coaches. Rachel Hampton (Woodville) exposure to national program through FHE Cup 2014. Planning a calendar of PD nights in 2016 to be published early 2016.

22. High Performance Hockey – the game for everyone! Review of Hockey Tas and TIS program completed with learnings being embedded in our SA programs. Separation of HP Manager & SASI Pathway Coach roles has provided 0.4FTE greater resourcing focus. Substantial grant funds received from ORS and SASI to invest over 3 years in athlete and coach development. Increase in number of athletes nationally identified at U16 level from 2 in 2014 to 5 in 2015. Cameron White & Cameron Joyce playing in Australian U23 side in Canberra against NZ late November.

24. HP – DAP & PAP Hockey – the game for everyone! PAP in Metro area - 37 attendees. Top tier state team athletes with future SASI potential. Mini-PAP in Sth East & Whyalla - 5 in each. Coached by Tim Kloeden (past AHL coach) & Matt McGregor (past AHL captain). Hockey SA paid out almost $4k in travel subsidies to 11 regional athletes to attend Adelaide based PAP training sessions. (funded by a grant) DAP rolled out in Metro and 6 Regional areas – 157 attendees. Hugh attending each regional area DAP. Pathway Coordinators appointed and being paid to run metro program: Mark Dedman (Grange) & Brodie Gleeson (Grange). Jamie Holland appointed as specialist GK coach across program. Toni Cronk visit early 2015 for specialist GK coaching sessions.

25. HP – State Teams Hockey – the game for everyone! 6 of 10 state teams finished higher this year than last, 2 same and 2 lower. Strong increase in number of Indoor state teams. 2 in 2014 to 5 in 2015 and planning for 6 in 2016. High coach retention rate from 2014 to 2015. Focus on developing and improving these coaches, early appointments and certainty from one year to next. Strong numbers in trials (approx. 50+ each age group from 13s, 15s, 18s). Picked a squad to train 21s for next year given low numbers trialling last year. Country Championships were used this year to select State Country Teams.

26. HP – Emerging opportunities Hockey – the game for everyone! Hockey SA using govt grants to fund intra-regional development squad games between: – Riverland SAP and Sunraysia (Vic) – South East DAP participating in Vic South West Games Boys & Girls U17 invitational development teams going to Brisbane in December to compete against Qld, Vic & ACT. Squad to be made up of approx. equal numbers from each regional area (2) and 4 from metro. Virtually none of them have played State previously. Strategic focus is on developing a broader talent base from which to select U18 and future U21 athletes. Considering establishing a State Indoor Championships in 2016. Plan to bring a Kookaburra GK to SA to run specialist GK clinics in 2016.

27. Schools Hockey – the game for everyone! Hockey SA in 30 schools in 2014 and expect a higher number than 2014 due to Sporting Schools Current Hockey SA program under review. Meeting with Hockey Vic on 3 Dec. Would like 1-2 clubs to volunteer to pilot the Hockey Vic program model in 2016. AE/TG meeting early December to follow up. Woodville? School Sports - some meetings completed and others being set up now to build a closer relationship. Working with Roma Mitchell school at the moment to partner with them in an Elite Hockey Program from 2016. Existing partnership with Henley High School Elite Hockey Program.

28. Sporting Schools Hockey – the game for everyone! 9 coaches presently endorsed by Hockey Australia in SA Term 3 – 18 schools interested in hockey; 12 programs run Term 4 – 9 schools interested in hockey; 2 programs run so far Overall, 707 participants in terms 3 & 4 so far

Facebook following increased from 2,000 to 3,1000 over past 12 months Twitter following up significantly but off a small base Re-branded the SA Suns & SA Hotshots and redesigned uniforms Presently have significant limitations with ways we can effectively communicate to members. Under review over summer.

31. Awards & Recognition Hockey – the game for everyone! 32. PLFridays Hockey – the game for everyone! Overall very positive feedback Attendance up significantly on last year on Friday nights, particularly early and late in the season Increased media interest – Channel 7 on Breast Cancer night in May Strong attendance in early weeks when no competition from junior matches. Crowds generally bigger when men play the second game Themes have worked and provided a focus, albeit they have been time consuming to manage Ipad or other giveaway resulted in higher attendance 2016 plan to have slightly less games (12 cf. 16) and a few less themed

33. Metro issues Hockey – the game for everyone! Metro Grass & Women’s Masters competitions have fallen in recent years to be only 4 teams per comp now. Needs reviving. Promotion & relegation – comments were due 22 Oct; methodology is embedded in the metro rules. Multiple teams per division – we aim to minimise the number of grades that have two teams from the same club next year Fixturing: – 2015 process addressed 91% of the 128 requests that clubs made; and these changes unbalanced the home/away balances and created other issues – Considering less club requests in 2016 so that we can improve the balance and integrity of the fixturing output Publishing game results in the newspaper – we need confidence in submitted and compliant match cards by Tuesday morning (latest) in order to achieve this. Presently match cards due Weds. Fines – under review in the rules. Vic example re match card submissions.

34. Hockey SA fees/changes Hockey – the game for everyone! Player registration invoicing process continues to have issues the way we are doing it. 2016 proposed change to process of collecting player rego. More details to come before Christmas. Utility costs represent 47% of pitch hire paid at the State Hockey Centre– power, water & gas. Team fees e.g. PL $3300 now vs $3385 in 2010 Value adds to membership in 2016: – 20% discount on Canterbury products – Sportspass discount card

39. Juniors – safety Hockey – the game for everyone! No significant safety issues or increase in injuries related to the junior competition changes. Only safety incidents in U14/U18 games are: – U18 Men – not a single injury reported on a match card for the year – U18 Women – friendly fire/own team – injury to head. – U14A Boys – ball to the head. – U14 Girls – stick to the wrist. – U14 Girls – someone hit on the knee.

40. Juniors – survey Hockey – the game for everyone! Junior survey feedback: – PADHC significantly over-represented in survey results (33% respondents vs 13% players in grades affected) – Adelaide and NE significantly under-represented in survey results (7% vs 21% and 9% vs 15% respectively) Some issues: – Relevance of some respondents e.g. Players age 31-45 not identifying themselves as a parent. – Anecdotal reports of people completing the survey multiple times and saying they were from a different club each time. – This makes it difficult to draw meaningful statistical analysis from the survey but comments have been valuable. Tabled with MCC this week.

41. Juniors Hockey – the game for everyone! Move U11 up to U12 for 2017? Issue 3-4 rounds of fixtures and then reassess grading? Presently collating data on permits to see how many clubs made use of provisions to play players down and so on. MCC considering these ideas at present. Junior Coordinator meeting to be scheduled.

45. Timetable for change Hockey – the game for everyone! Should we consider delaying the PL/PLR rollout from 2016 to 2017 to enable: a)PL Clubs more time to move towards the KPIs around Star Club, Good Sports and so on – also acknowledging that four of the PL clubs presently are undertaking major work around facilities development; b)A greater level of discussion on the draft rules before they are implemented. MCC proposal that clubs sign a resolution agreeing the above to provide a level of commitment to change ahead of Board decision to delay.
