Academic Chemistry Nomenclature

Naming Compounds  When naming compounds it is essential that you identify the kind of compound you are naming.  Why?  Naming rules vary with the type of compound. 2

Naming Compounds  There are 5 possible choices when naming compounds:  Binary Ionic Compound  Between a metal and a nonmetal  Ends in –ide  Ternary Ionic Compound  Has at least 3 elements (i.e. contains a polyatomic ion)  Usually ends in –ate or -ite 3

Naming Compounds  Binary Molecular Compound  Between a nonmetal and a nonmetal  Uses prefixes  Ends in –ide  Acids  Contain hydrogen  Hydro---ic means a binary acid  -ic means the oxyanion ends in –ate  -ous means the oxyanion ends in -ite 4

Naming Compounds  Bases  Contain hydroxide ions – OH -  Named like any ternary ionic compound 5

Naming Compounds  All binary compounds end in –ide. However there are 2 polyatomic that also end in –ide. You need to stay on the lookout for these:  OH - hydroxide  CN - cyanide 6

Examples  CaS  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 7

Examples  SF 6  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 8

Examples  HI  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 9

Examples  Ca(NO 3 ) 2  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 10

Examples  H 3 PO 4  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 11

Examples  Ca(OH) 2  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 12

Writing Formulas  When writing formulas it is essential that you identify the kind of compound you are naming.  Why?  Formula rules vary with the type of compound. 13

Examples  Dihydrogen monoxide  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 14

Examples  Cesium hydroxide  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 15

Examples  Hydroiodic acid  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 16

Examples  Ammonium phosphate  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 17

Examples  Carbonic acid  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 18

Examples  Barium nitride  What are the keys for this compound?  What type of compound is this?  What is the name of the compound? 19

Summary  Identify the type of compound you have before you name the compound or write the formula 20
