Application of a Materials-Related Distress Rating System for Portland Cement Concrete Airfield Pavements Presented to the FAA Technology Transfer Conference Atlantic City, New Jersey April 20 to 22, 2010 David Peshkin, P.E.

Acknowledgments Applied Pavement Technology, Inc. Co-Authors  Tom Van Dam  Jim Bruinsma

Background  Properly designed and constructed PCC generate expected M&R deterioration patterns  Early, a pavement may lose 1 to 2 PCI points/year; later, perhaps 2 to 4  Deterioration of PCC pavements with MRD is extremely variable  M&R options for MRD-affected pavements are different and may not be appropriate for same period

Background (continued)  In 2009, APTech performed a project-level evaluation of a PCC feature with MRD  Evaluation included PCI, MRDR, limited petrographic, and FWD testing  Goal was to develop an M&R plan

PCI Evaluation  PCI performed at project level  MRD survey procedure triggered by specific distresses

PCI Results SectionPCI % Due To LoadClimateOther 107246135 208174944 308063559 4080592912  Area-weighted PCI = 80  Overall good condition

PCI Distresses  Corner Break (L, M)  Linear Cracking (L, M)  Durability Cracking (L, M, H)  Joint Seal Damage (M)  Popouts  Small Patch (L, M, H)  Large Patch (L, M)  Map Cracking (M)  Pumping  Shrinkage Cracking  Joint Spall (L, M, H)  Corner Spall (L, M, H)

Deterioration (PCI)  Critical PCI of 65 reached in 8 more years

Section 10 MRDR = 88

Section 20 MRDR = 103

Section 30 MRDR = 54

Primary MRD Indicators  Parallel cracking  Perpendicular cracking  Honeycombing  Popouts  Patching  Staining

Parallel Cracking (L), Discoloration and Staining

Perpendicular and Parallel Cracking (L), Discoloration and Staining

Perpendicular and Parallel Cracking (M), Discoloration and Staining

Petrographic Examination Coarse aggregate is limestone and dolomitic limestone Fine aggregate is siliceous material (quartz and feldspar) All PCC includes Class C fly ash ASR identified in all cores Micro-cracking and gel are localized

Petrographic Examination

Lessons Learned  PCI indicates generally good conditions  MRDR indicates one section already requires significant rehabilitation, and two others will require rehabilitation within several years  In this instance, MRDR is better suited to assess FOD risk and plan for future M&R
